The U.S. government has attempted to obtain the master encryption keys that Internet companies use to shield millions of users' private Web communications from eavesdropping.
These demands for master encryption keys, which have not been disclosed previously, represent a technological escalation in the clandestine methods that the FBI and the National Security Agency employ when conducting electronic surveillance against Internet users.
If the government obtains a company's master encryption key, agents could decrypt the contents of communications intercepted through a wiretap or by invoking the potent surveillance authorities of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Web encryption -- which often appears in a browser with a HTTPS lock icon when enabled -- uses a technique called SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer.
"The government is definitely demanding SSL keys from providers," said one person who has responded to government attempts to obtain encryption keys. The source spoke with CNET on condition of anonymity.
...
Apple, Yahoo, AOL, Verizon, AT&T, Opera Software's Fastmail.fm, Time Warner Cable, and Comcast declined to respond to queries about whether they would divulge encryption keys to government agencies. "The requests are coming because the Internet is very rapidly changing to an encrypted model," a former Justice Department official said. "SSL has really impacted the capability of U.S. law enforcement. They're now going to the ultimate application layer provider."
NSA and FBI can go fuck themselves.
son of a mother fuck..
They won't get them right guys?
Right?
This is just the inevitable outcome of the cat-and-mouse game regarding SSL. Encryption too hard to break? Just completely obsolete it by forcing the keys out with national security letters.
For some reason, I see them getting the keys, welp.
Fuck off already.
Self-signed key or any other form of encryption US => EU or south america, later NSA.
Give them Rust Keys instead.
The joy of the current network model means we could relatively easily just drop a new encryption protocol in place of SSL if they do manage to get the keys. Though getting it adopted and used effectively is a different matter thanks to almost everything big using SSL now.
They can fuck right on off

Make a post in the rust forum saying that all key requests go to the NSA, you don't even need to email anyone just save it as a draft.
Actually what if Santa is actually real and part of the NSA?
Why can't people riot and protest over shit like this instead?
Because a wannabe gangster getting killed by a "i dont play by the rules" cop is far more important than your privacy from the government.

Shut uuuuuuuuup, I'm trying to watch this American Idol rerun!
More serious, a disturbing number of people today fail to understand the incredible danger behind the phrase "if you don't have anything to hide, you have nothing to fear." They literally do not understand the giant abusive potential for such a policy.

do you hear that? it's the sound of a thousand angry social justice warriors descending upon this thread
may god have mercy on your soul
NSA, FBI, go fuck yourselves with a sandpaper dildo.
Why go this far?

I've always wondered this. Are the US citizens really so complacent that the only protests are over young adults being shot? Even equal rights groups don't seem to protest, merely "rally". You guys can't complain about your rights being "eroded" when you aren't doing much to stop it from happening. If you stand by your constitution so dearly, why haven't you started an armed rebellion against your clearly corrupt government?
Oh. Right. You'd get stomped by your massive military, and it is and awful lot of effort when you can just bitch about it on the Internet (not for much longer if they get their way!).
they probably already have the keys to be honest

it's even better when British people talk like they know exactly how it must work over there
sensationalist media is a powerful thing. the Trayvon case was inflated way bigger than the PRISM fiasco.

it's like instead of trying to defend themselves they just decided to act worse
Then someone within leaks them, and all SSL secured sites become vulnerable.
Someone's probably coming up with a new algorithm to do something similar to SSL but more secure.
...probably...
hopefully..

That right there. That is the shit you need to get fixed. If your fellow Americans were able to pay attention to actual issues and protest them, you might get shit done. But until you fix your media twisting everything, and hiding things they won't make a bomb from, that isn't going to happen.
Though I do find it kinda weird that the NSA are always managing to drop the ball and get caught out, you don't seem to hear much about other countries spy organisations which is either a good sign, or fucking terrifying.

Don't you brits have that thing where your government can just say it's illegal to talk about something, and illegal to talk about what you're not allowed to talk about? Maybe you should sort that out before you condescend everyone here.

This explains the problems very well:

March on Washington D.C. and start burning everything down to the ground? America is one of the largest and most powerful countries on the planet, and surely an "uprising" of any kind would have a huge impact on the world's economy and politics. This isn't Libya or Tunisia or Egypt we're talking about.
i had to retype this bullshit like 5 times because this website keeps fucking up >:(
I think the key signing authorities need to be moved well out of their jurisdiction.

Pretty sure they can't just say "yup, that's illegal. cart him away!". But yes, we don't quite have the same freedom of speech you do. Doesn't stop people here from protesting things that matter to them. Admittedly it was mostly student age citizens in the last big one, and nothing came of it because the Tories are terribad leaders.

True, but you don't have to dismantle your entire country to fix problems. Only to remove the current powers entirely (which is what they needed in the various uprisings going on). Your government is meant to be fairly compartmentalised right? So you try and remove or fix the bit that's broken, rather than ripping it all up and starting again.
I'm not expecting riots, or violence. I'm expecting people who claim to love their freedom so much to actually stand up for it. Which I've not seen apart from lunatics who think 9/11 was an inside job.

It kept doing that to me. Aggravating.

This. It's sad. The only way to fix the government is to scrap it and start over, and the people holding place at the moment won't let that happen. They have their hands so deep in corporate pockets that it'd be both political and literal suicide to bail, and most Americans are either too old to care, too young to care, too complacent to notice, or too scared to take action. Some thing MAJOR has to go down before a revolution will begin, and I have a hunch that that will likely be within the next few decades as information spreads and fires light.
