For my birthday, I'm planning on asking for (or buying myself) an AMD Phenom II CPU. Here are my specs now:

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9550 @ 2.21GHz

GPU: GeForce 9800GTX+

RAM: 4GB DDRII RAM 800MHz(?)

Mobo ASRock N61P-S; NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE / nForce 430

Power: 480W
According to this list here, my motherboard can support some of the Phenom II's. You might be saying to yourself, "If you have a list of what CPU's can work on your motherboard, why not just pick one and not waste time making this thread?"
Well, I've bought two CPU's in the past that didn't work on motherboards I had (after I did the research), and they were both big wastes of money, so I'm a bit paranoid here. I just want to make sure if I can freely buy any CPU I see on that list and be OK, or is there something this list isn't telling me? Am I safe to get a Phenom II on the list?
I'll get a new power supply to support my new CPU if need be.
It might. AMD ph2 955s work off a AM3 socket. AMD boasts their new AM3 CPUs are compatible with AM2+ sockets.
Better to just get an am3 socket mobo and ddr3 ram.
480W doesn't tell us anything. What is the efficiency?
Don't cheap out on powersupplies.
940 x4
940 x4
I'll take that as a "Hey Zippy, the 940 Quad-Core will have a 110% chance of working!"
Better to just get an am3 socket mobo and ddr3 ram.
I'm not made of money, and I doubt any of my family will want to pay that. Assuming the price will be big, I don't know. The box (and that list) says this motherboard is "AM3 CPU Ready!"
you are taking it the right way

Some people say the pins don't line up with the 955.
The 940 will work.
AM3 mobo and DDR3 ram will be more expensive by about 80.
Don't cheap out on power supply
Better to get a dual or tri core and a good powersupply than a 20 dollar POS.
Alright, I can't find any site that will show the pins of neither the AMD Phenom 9550 nor AMD Phenom II 940. So I can't compare.
And by the looks of it, I won't need to get a better power supply. When I go to this site:

I put in all my specs, and even some I don't have, and I'm still under 480W.
Forgive me, I'm not too good with motherboards... My mobo will support any PCIe x16 card in the known universe, right?
PSU are very important, a bad one can cause serious trouble.
I'd stick with Corsair. I got an overkill 650W from corsair, though it has been measured to be able to pump out 780W without failing.
So getting a 650W will get you a long way.

You and this guy should get along just fine.

Paying extra money for a 20 extra Watts? I assume this can handle more than that?

What about these?

More watts for better prices. Are these brands any good?
brand is more important that watts
if you get into thinking along the lines of "1000W for $10? what a bargain!" then after 10 minutes of use expect to have a smoldering heap where the PSU was and the rest of the components fried/shrapnel encrusted

all you need your psu is probably fine

Am3 processors with in am2's\am2+'s. I should know. I did it with my 955 into an a7gm-s 2.0..

I assume that was successful then?
With that 940 processor, will I be able to run Left 4 Dead with max settings and 4x AA?
Depends on your resolution.
Depends on your resolution.
I don't think the resolution will matter if we are talking about processors.;

Yes.

I've got an E8400 and an 8800GT and I run at max setting with 8x AA.

1920x1200 res too
Depends on your resolution.
I always play at 1680x1050.
