Wired's Danger Room has learned that a computer virus has infected the United States' Predator and Reaper drones. The virus is a keylogger that keeps track of every pilots' keystroke as they perform missions over Afghanistan and other locations.
The folks at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada (where most of the drone missions are controlled from) found the virus two weeks ago but have had trouble removing it. Danger Room's source ominously says, "We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back. We think it's benign. But we just don't know." There haven't been any leaks of classified information yet (that they know of, at least) but it's extremely troubling that no one knows how it got there.
One theory is that because the Predator and Reaper crews use removable hard drives to load maps and videos, the virus could have spread from those drives. The drives have been used in both classified and unclassified computers so confidential data could have been logged and sent somewhere else.
The ramifications of this virus will be HUGE and represents the new war front our military has to fight. If the keylogger was maliciously put there by hackers, they now have access to a treasure trove of classified files, missions, etc. that could put the drone fleet and other military serviceman at risk. This is not good. [Danger Room]

SKYNET
That is actually kind of worrying, the files the person can take to sell another government.

It is also likely that it is a government behind it.

You would think that they would use separate computers for piloting drones and accessing their file network.
"Get AVG Free Anti-Virus for your Drone!"
Anon will claim they did it.
So the drones run on Windows? :v:
With all the money they spend on military you'd think they'd have their own "secret" OS that is pretty much virus proof.
There's the mistake they made.
I wouldn't say that it was a mistake really. You need a way to load media onto it and a removable hard drive is kind of the best thing for it. At least in my opinion it is. I hope they have some form of protection on those hard drives in case a drone gets shot down.
Guess they'll have to pilot them with the onscreen keyboard.

I agree, it seems like a bit of a fuck up.
I thought this was a key principle when it comes to securing confidential data. PCs that hold classified data are meant to have no connection at all with non classified PCs, like the air gap is not meant to be bridged at all.
Makes you wonder that if a virus could have gotten in that way what could have gotten out.

They won't be able to hijack them, right?
Last thing I need to hear is rogue drones flying through the sky shooting everybody with missles ARMING AGMS STANDBYE SOAP CALL IN THE PREDATOR TO KILL THAT PREDATOR DRONE RAMIREZ REMOVE THAT VIRUS THEN HIJACK THE PREDATOR DRONE SOAP THROW THAT KNIFE
It's the Chinese or the Russians, taking bets now.
They're trying to figure out how to work drones properly, seeing as they both crashed theirs :v:

They ARE known for their hackers...
China
Greenland is obviously behind it all
Drones are now banned from Australia.
Drop 10 billion dollars into cyber security as part of military budget.
Ugh Reading the comments on that since it's gizmodo, and this was super painful to read:

"The virus has been traced back to a website advertising free 'smilies', images of cartoon faces with different facial expressions. Prime suspect is a recent visitor: 7 year old Abbey, daughter of a DoD worker who's identity will not be revealed for security reasons."
Iran's getting back at us for that virus we made to sabotage their nuclear plants.
Their pilots need to stop downloading porn.

I thought pretty much everyone agreed that was the Israelis?
Wouldn't the keylogger on a drone just return useless information?
