Here's hoping it's actually a proper successor
$18,000 kickstarter for a free source mod? I love the Specialists, but this seems a little ridiculous.
tf2 blood?!
$18,000 kickstarter for a free source mod? I love the Specialists, but this seems a little ridiculous.
How dare they ask for such ridiculous amount of money! How much did you expect them to ask? $500? They have to quit their job and work on it, and they plan on a standalone game using source engine, so license cost and valve cut from sales as well.
Wow, those are some insanely low-poly models.
I hope this gets made, though I kind of wish they'd just charge for it and not make it in the source engine.
I hope they add weaboos as stretch goals.
I played this for a bit, it's fucking great. It really is The Specialists: Source with some other stuff added on. I hope they succeed, but either way this thing will get finished, it'll just take them longer if they don't reach their goal.

Isn't the cost of licensing the Source Engine hundreds of thousands of dollars? Also, what's the point of making a standalone Source game if it's free? Why not just release it as a mod?

Having a completely free standalone Source Multiplayer Shooter would be sweet but from a financial standpoint it's a complete waste. [editline]now[/editline] Nevermind
Free, not free-to-play. I remember the days when "free" didn't mean "free until you get into the game." When I say the game is free, I mean that it's completely and entirely free. We don't charge money for powerups or special weapons. Double Action will always be completely free. It was built by a community that loves action games and wants to have fun playing one.
That's actually pretty damn generous of them, I'm curious to see how it turns out.
I hope they bring back kung-fu, used to spend my time playing melee only servers.
$18,000 kickstarter for a free source mod? I love the Specialists, but this seems a little ridiculous.

Here's the costs breakdown: $5000 for one programmer/designer. This is me! I'll be in charge of gameplay programming, fixing bugs, improving/iterating on our designs and filling in when others need help. $5000 for one artist. Ryan Goodrich will be our artist. He'll be in charge of making player and weapon models, and helping to fill out environment art. Ryan has been involved in the modding and indie game scene making art for over 10 years and is a long time fan of action games. He works as a professional CG artist. $5000 for one level designer. Nick Kochman will be our level designer. He's been with the DA team since the beginning and is responsible for about a third of our current levels. Some extra for the rewards. T-shirts and posters cost money. Kickstarter and Amazon also take their cut.
Having a completely free standalone Source Multiplayer Shooter would be sweet but from a financial standpoint it's a complete waste.
No, they're doing it completely free, that's the point of the kickstarter, if they can get enough money to cover all the costs, they don't need to have any money to come from the game.
Kickstater is like the new way to get paid for doing stuff, right? I mean, 5000$ for each is a breach in the system for getting paid while making a free Source powered mod.

Why not just release it as a mod?
Why would Source engine be hundreds of thousands of dollars when UDK and CryEngine is basically free up to certain profit margin? Besides, Valve already takes a 70% cut if you use their engine and sell it on Steam afaik. The point in making it standalone is to have more freedom over the engine. I suppose mod doesn't cut it, and you would need HL2 and other dependencies (although who doesn't have HL2 these days?). With standalone, you just install steam and download, which seems like a good idea.
There's no way they'll swing a standalone game on that budget, much less a free one. Isn't the cost of licensing the Source Engine hundreds of thousands of dollars?
From the FAQ on the kickstarter page:
You mention you could get a Source engine license if you went past your funding goal. How much is that? Sorry, can't say. Valve keeps that info pretty tight. It's not unreasonably high though, or I wouldn't mention the possibility here at all. The Blade Symphony Kickstarter got an engine license with $15000 so if you read between the line, doubling our funding goal makes a license a very real possibility.

They want to take time off from schools and their jobs trough the summer to focus entirely on the mod and they need money to be able to do that without then having to make money off the mod.
Which is very comfy for them as they only make a source mod, and not an entire game.
Wow, those are some insanely low-poly models.
I hope they re-do the models, the characters look horrendous at the moment.
Which is very comfy for them as they only make a source mod, and not an entire game.
This is Kickstarter. This is exactly how you use it. To people got used to KS being a cheap preorder thing. Stop doing that. You're not preordering the game, you're investing and getting the game as a thank you.
Holy shit on a stick in the hands of the Pope. I though TS had been long gone & abandoned. The official website for the HL1 version were down for almost a year last time I checked.
Please kickstarter. Make this work.

How will they make the mod then? Or maybe they should release this in 2015? And they are using TF2 Engine, I don't think that's 2007?
Oh wow they did a really good job with the PR for this mod, it's literally everywhere At it's current state, Action Half Life 2 is better (as in more polish), but I can see this growing into something big
The specialists is one of the greatest mods of all time, so I am really excited for this.

AhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH FUCK FUCK FUCK EVERYBODY PLEDGE THIS FUCK
they re-used counter strike weapons and sounds, plus the tf2 blood? Hopefully those are placeholders or that is some lazy effort...
