Dentists have found "striking" levels of bad teeth in athletes competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
A fifth of athletes surveyed said their oral health actually damaged their training and performance.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggested cavities, tooth erosion and gum disease were common.
Researchers said athletes, as a group, had worse dental health than other people of a similar age.
Hey man, toothpaste and flossing is known to decrease athletic performance 0.0000000000000001%, you can't have that shit in the Olympics if wan to perform well!

Doesn't bad oral health lead to heart problems though?
ugh
I can sort of see this. Dental health is non-immediate enough that people would happily ignore problems if it meant they could spend time on the track instead of in a waiting room.
You don't get to compete in the Olympics without being crazy determined; I bet a ton of Olympians would lose a tooth or two in exchange for extra training time.

This is referring to all athletes that competed. Usain Bolt is mentioned in the article.

You don't get to fix a mistake until I point it out, damnit!
World-class athletes not having 100% perfect bodies AND teeth, what is this?

More than just heart problems, it's a great path into the body for many bacteria and viruses, leading to all sorts of diseases.
-snip-
athletes aren't anywhere near as health-conscious as people think they are. They are interested in performance not longevity.
Between the heinous dietary habits (mcdonalds, sugar filled energy drinks, candy pre training) and the drug use (insulin, anabolic steroids, HGH, stimulants) its honestly surprising to me that dental issues are the only thing that pops up on a regular basis
