• Plans to charge patients from outside EU 150% treatment cost on NHS
Patients from outside the EU are to be charged 150% of the cost of treatment in the NHS in a fresh crackdown on so-called "health tourism". The move by the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is designed to encourage NHS Trusts to recover the cost of operations from migrants. Mr Hunt believes the plans could save the the health service £500m a year. The government also wants to charge EU patients 125% of the normal cost of treatment. Those hospitals that fail to bill foreign patients could also face fines, the BBC News Channel's chief political correspondent Norman Smith said. Many migrants currently get free NHS care immediately or soon after arrival in the UK. The government is asking the NHS to clamp down by identifying these patients more effectively so costs can be recovered from them. Under the plans, non-EU patients receiving a £100 procedure could get a bill of up to £150.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-28291276
I'm assuming this is just elective procedures? They're not going to facefuck someone's finances if they get into an accident or get stabbed in the UK, surely?
It's just the UK being anti-EU and giving them the finger again, nothing new.
it says outside the eu though [editline]14th July 2014[/editline] nvm
To roughly translate: "Because you came from a different set of arbitrary boundaries than ours, we're going to make you pay 150% that everyone else does. Because we can, not that it costs us any more, but just because we're massive cunts."

The government is asking the NHS to clamp down by identifying these patients more effectively so costs can be recovered from them." Facepunch should get the "bad reading" rating back

This is costing us loads per year in people just coming here, getting treated and then fucking off. This isn't us being cunts, this is us trying to not end up with a huge amount of money being lost.
I'm assuming this is just elective procedures? They're not going to facefuck someone's finances if they get into an accident or get stabbed in the UK, surely?
Emergency health care is free to anyone on the NHS.

Because we can, not that it costs us any more, but just because we're massive cunts."
No it doesn't, not at all. It's more something like "It's cheaper for people who contribute to the cash pool with taxes, and more expensive to people who don't". It's more just than it ever was.
To roughly translate: "Because you came from a different set of arbitrary boundaries than ours, we're going to make you pay 150% that everyone else does. Because we can, not that it costs us any more, but just because we're massive cunts."
Well the NHS provides mostly free healthcare for the british, in America even americans get fucked over by insane costs.

Because we can, not that it costs us any more, but just because we're massive cunts."
Granted you do sound all cool and smart for the bit about countries being arbitrary boundaries, but jesus christ man, why the fuck can't a country give special benefits to people who fucking live there?
What's the point when the NHS will be privatised in all but name soon
This is one of those things where I agree with the idea, but in practice, it isn't going to work. Some people will be able to cheat the system, while the deserving are going to end up with no money. I mean, take a look at ATOS, if it worked, it'd be great
why 150%?
why 150%?
Deterrent, think of it like a fine
what purpose does the deterrent serve? isn't having to pay the full price enough to ware off anybody that is trying to take advantage of the free healthcare scheme

There will always be people who get fucked over by a new law, or find a way to work around it. Hell, these freeloaders are so common they're factored into most laws before they're passed.
Welp. Their goes living with my aunt on my dual-citizenship for three months to get my teeth fixed up.
As a full time employed adult who pays taxes, I don't really agree with this.
Welp. Their goes living with my aunt on my dual-citizenship for three months to get my teeth fixed up.
You've got a dual citizenship? Eh, I dunno, that might just be enough to allow it then, don't you think?
Welp. Their goes living with my aunt on my dual-citizenship for three months to get my teeth fixed up.
What? That means you're a citizen of the UK, you get all the benefits. Though I don't really think the UK is the best place for dental care judging by it's iinhabitants :v: Poland seems to be the EU winner in skill and pricetag.

You have to pay if you're over 18 and not in education.
I think it's people's own reluctance to actually go to the dentist. You have to pay if you're over 18 and not in education.
But some (if not most) jobs include dental.
But some (if not most) jobs include dental.
Not in the UK, I think one person I know has private dental care through an employer [editline]14th July 2014[/editline] That said having visited NHS and private dentists, the NHS seem much more thorough
This is one of those things where I agree with the idea, but in practice, it isn't going to work.
Deterrent, think of it like a fine
Why should someone be fined for needing healthcare in a country? 100% of the cost on all procedures, emergency or not, would be perfectly fine for deterring health tourism because you'd just be getting what you paid for. [editline]14th July 2014[/editline] Unless those kinds of paid health services are subsidized by taxes even at their paid price, in which case yeah, that makes sense.
