Sony cancels December 25th release for The Interview
With theater chains defecting en masse, Sony Pictures Entertainment has pulled the planned Christmas release of “The Interview.”
In announcing the decision to cancel the holiday debut, Sony hit back at the hackers who threatened movie theaters and moviegoers and who have terrorized the studio and its employees for weeks.
Full Statement:
“In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.
Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”
This sucks. I really wanted to see it.
People seriously took this shit seriously? It's a fucking movie.
When's the movie going to get released, now?
WILL the movie get released?

South Park hit it on the head
Soooo is this US only? Pleaase?
The terrorists have won...
I can form my own little collective and just say "if you go and see <x> or related events, you'll get shot, your families will get shot too" and do absolutely nothing else. The real nutjobs would do it for the group.
This isn't "hitting back at the hackers" this is caving into threats of violence.
now let's place bets on what streaming service throws them enough money to get streaming instead of theater
The next step is threatening any store that sells the DVD and anyone that buys the movie.
I can sort of see why the theater companies would be hesitant to release the movie though. They do NOT want a repeat of the Aurora shooting, even if the threats are empty and vague.
north korea is literally a country that kills its own people in death camps. Why anyone would have to rethink criticizing them is beyond me
Cowards.
people take NK seriously
lmao
We should just wipe out NK.
What are they going to do? Nuke themselves?

They're working on nuking Atlantis, i would be careful about what you say.
I still remember everyone being scared over the 2011 North Korean threats and telling people who doubted their legitimacy "NO DUDE THIS IS ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN".
Still waiting.
Guys, they're considering a VOD release of the film.
Chances are they're just waiting for this to blow over. Just deciding not to release the film to theaters at all will be big financial loss (and Sony can't take many more of those).
I think it's pretty stupid of them to back out, are they going to do this every time someone does this now?
Now at a local porn website near you:

It's really not Sony's call. Every major theater chain pulled their showings, too.

If Sony was smart, they'd release the movie on Amazon Instant Video/Google Play/iTunes in the next week with all the press. Sell it for $12.99 and they'll get tons of money.
Now we need someone to call them and threaten violence if the film doesn't get released!

Seriously though, this is fucked, Sony should have gone through with it anyway. Now they've lost a whole lot of money over what could have been some idiots that had nothing to do with the NK.
Was there even any actual evidence that it was the North Korean government behind this?

it wasn't worth releasing though
half the screens in the US wouldn't be showing it, they most likely wouldn't show it once they felt the threat had passed because now it's an old movie and people have seen it elsewhere
Oh my god, this is the Valve/Hatred thread all over again. I can't take this anymore!
What?

ya even if the threat is probably not credible, no executive would want another new years massacre, not when the next month is one of the busiest times of their year
GOP have done nothing besides the original data leak, that alone is a quagmire of problems however releasing the film probably would've called GOP's bluff and potentially gather more intel on these guys.
Great job, hackers, now I wanna see it. I didn't care much about it before but this torrent of publicity is making a lot more people aware of it.

Well if the theaters themselves are refusing to carry it, then what's the point of doing a theatrical release? They do have to make their money, though, so it will probably get a VoD release instead.
Which I'll gladly pay for just on principle; fuck the hackers who did this shit.
