[RUMOUR] Apple allegedly testing larger screened iPhone & iPad according to the Wall Street Journal
36 replies, posted
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is testing “larger screens” with a view to launching a larger iPhone and a new 13-inch version of the iPad.
The newspaper cites sources from suppliers in Asia who say that Apple has asked for prototypes of screens that are larger than 4-inches for the iPhone, and it is said to be exploring screens for a larger iPad which would be 13-inches wide diagonally. The latter spec could see a third version of the iPad launched, going beyond the original 9.7-inch display and smaller iPad Mini which has a 7.9-inch screen.
The Journal points out, as ever, that the company is known for tinkering and experimenting with the design of its devices so the testing doesn’t mean that larger screened phones and tablets are necessarily coming to a retailer near you. However, it is telling of the way that bigger devices from Samsung and others have performed that the Cupertino-based company is even considering increasing display sizes at all.
...
Apple, of course, upped the size of the iPhone screen when it launched the iPhone 5 last year, so the company has shown a capacity to make changes incrementally — but it remains to be seen what lengths it will go to with its next devices, which are tipped to be unveiled later this year.
Going to be interesting to see what they're going to whip up
The iPhone just needs a screen that isn't so damn narrow.

Would be awesome playing Where's my Water on that thing

Personally I find the dimensions of the iPhone perfect. I don't like the current trend for big screens.
Hopefully this means I will soon be able to turn my walls, floor and ceiling to be Iphones.
It will be grand.
Why on earth are people legitimately thinking that a 13 inch iPad is going to be a thing?

If somebody else is selling a 13 inch tablet and making money off of it, Apple is going to copy the shit out of them like every product they make.
But then the hipsters won't be able to fit it in their skinny jeans!

iPads don't fit in skinny jeans, my nexus 7 does but even walking around with it in your pocket becomes a choire

It's probably fine for most people, I have big hands so 4" screens feel kinda small
Of course they're "testing" it. They test a lot of things. And then release the things that work the best.
rumor != fact
apple was rumored to be making a tv for like 5 years now

If they're going to increase the iPhone's screen size I hope they don't increase it by much. I really like being able to use it in one hand.

Maybe the size of a Lumia 820 would be pretty perfect to me tbh
I hate to jump on the Apple hate train but I personally love my Note II out of all of the phones and handheld devices that I've owned. People always ask me how I can carry such a large phone around; which is understandable since the thing is quite massive. It doesn't bother me at all though; it's actually quite fitting for me since I can just slide it into one of my interior suit jacket pockets and go. I've tried going back to using my iPod touch or even other people's iPhones and I just can't because the screen feels way too small.
The HTC One probably has the perfect screen size, fits in my hand perfectly. An iPhone of those dimensions would be pretty cool

I don't see what's so hate train-y about this
everyone has their own preferences

I was just trying to avoid someone jumping me for mentioning an Android device in an Apple thread.
I've never owned an Android device before this so I don't know the running history of Android too well. I haven't been disappointed yet though. Plus the fact that I don't have to use iTunes is phenomenal.

The same Apple who is credited with making the smartphone mainstream and the tablet mainstream? Huh, okay.
I'm gonna second Bredirish and say the Note II is huge, but still a phenomenal device. I upgraded from an iPhone 4. I would still recommend both Android and iOS - they're both good and having direct competitors is only good for the consumer, so quit yer bitchin', everyone.
But the iPad already has a large screen. How could you possibly make that bigger.

Of course they are working on a bigger iPad.

And the homescreen will still piss away screen real estate with a tiny icon grid even if they do.

you do realize that most phones and tablets are similar because the most cost efficient and aesthetically pleasing devices are black rectangles, right?

oh wait nvm "hurr durr apple hipsters expensive buy an android instead buy a PC instead, apple sucks haha steve jobs"
I don't understand why this is news.
Companies test variations of their products all the time, big deal.
