Does anyone have specific information on how fast a video takes to upload onto Youtube?
For example, how long would a 1GB video take to upload on a goo internet connection?
Also, once it's uploaded, how long does it take for the video to be able to use the highest settings possible? That I mean is, say I uploaded a 4K resolution video (also called 2160p), how much longer does that take to upload than a regular 1080p video?
Thank you.
"I have a fat internet connection and a huge file, how long will it take?"
Is basically what you're asking, which we can't answer because you aren't giving us any quantitative information on exactly how fast your internet connection.
Define "good internet connection" because you are being too vague as GiGaBiTe stated. It all depends on your internet connection. Run a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net
Then post your results.
Here are the results, then.
Ping: 10ms
Download Rate: 18.52 Mbps
Upload Rate: 5.23 Mbps
I'm guessing all that matters in this case is the upload rate, but what I was talking about was like this;
I uploaded a file, YouTube finished uploading and processing the video.
When I go to the video itself, immediately after it was uploaded, the highest resolution it can be is 360p, despite the video having been uploaded in 4K. After waiting a few minutes and going back to the video page, the new highest resolution is 1080p. My question is how long it takes YouTube to go all the way up to 4K resolution on playback, and whether it's dependent on file size, the video length, video bit-rate, a combination of any these factors, or other factors.
Depends since they have a queuing system as their servers have to make like 15 versions of the same video, starting with the low quality version so its at least viewable first. And all the other 15 versions of videos being uploaded with yours. The 4K version will probably appear within a day or so though.
Upload rate: 5.23 mbits/s is 653kb/s.
Take into account up to 80% overhead, that brings it to 522kb/s.
Beer mat maths tell me that will take roughly 2048 seconds to upload 1gb at 522k/s. (34 minutes).
The processing time can't be calculated. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the servers have a queue system, and some transcoding happens faster than others.
Yeah, it depends on the load of YouTube's transcoders, and probably also your rank as a channel. (It would only make sense if popular channels were prioritized).
The codec also has an impact, I've noticed that my WMV files are really fast for YouTube to process.
Use handbrake to downsize it for web
