I agree that I would love it if valve talked to the community more directly, but asking for details about the layoffs seems kinda dumb
RPS: But especially in those cases, is it really so difficult to say, “Hey, we’re working on this. It might not end up being super successful, and we might not release it, but we’re trying”? I think gamers are warming to that mentality, especially now that crowdfunding has made open development so popular. Not that Valve should go fully open, but maybe just keep people in the loop a bit better.
Jeff Cain: I just think people would rather see action. They don’t necessarily care if we tell them we’re working on something so much as they see the results.
I whole heatedly disagree with RPS. Cain is right: people want results. How many times has EA made a public statement only for people to say, "Oh it's just a PR/damage control. I'll see when they actually do something"?
Gamers will also take everything as final and absolute. If a developer so much as release a concept art for their game, gamers will take it as the final product. Alpha means final for gamers; look at Rust.

I would like it if you stopped stereotyping every gamer ever, because that's not true.
It's just as important to deliver as it is to maybe sometimes tell your players that yes, you are in fact alive and are listening to what they're saying. Otherwise everyone will grow frustrated.

That's usually after they've majorly fucked something up. A little status update here and there is always appreciated. Just look at Bungie and their weekly updates, they're never too specific in their posts but it's reassuring to know they're churning away at their next big project, and you even get some behind-the-scenes insight into what it's like over there.
Yeah, I KNOW Valve is also churning away at whatever project, but the problem is they're so spread out in what they're doing it's hard to get a lock on exactly which direction they're going. They don't have to say "We're going to bring Half Life 3 out in 2016" or anything, they could just talk about some new mocap process they're implementing into the game, or whatever. They could talk about how big their HL3 idea wall is, or how Gabe is putting everyone on an all-granola diet for the next few months. Something that shows me they aren't just a game retailer that makes updates on the side.
