Nova Scotia is one of the most beautiful Canadian Provinces but if you are new to Canada or even to the East here is some background about Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia (pronounced /ˌnoʊvəˈskoʊʃə/; Latin for New Scotland; Scottish Gaelic: Alba Nuadh; French: Nouvelle-Écosse) is a Canadian province located on Canada's southeastern coast. It is the most-populous province in Atlantic Canada. Its capital, Halifax, is a major economic centre of the region. Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300 sq mi). Its population of 939,531[1] makes it the fourth-least-populous province of the country, though second-most-densely populated. Nova Scotia's economy is traditionally largely resource-based, but has diversified since the middle of the 20th century. Industries such as fishing, mining, forestry and agriculture remain very important and have been joined by tourism, technology, film, music, and finance.
#1. City of Halifax. It's just an awesome city, also In 1917 one of the biggest explosions of that time occurred..by accident,
he Halifax Explosion occurred on Thursday, December 6, 1917, when the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, was devastated by the huge detonation of the SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship, fully loaded with wartime explosives, which accidentally collided with the Norwegian SS Imo in "The Narrows" section of the Halifax Harbour. About 2,000 people were killed by debris, fires, or collapsed buildings and it is estimated that more than 9,000 people were injured. This is still the world's largest man-made accidental explosion.
Nice. #2. Cape Breton Island.
Cape Breton Island is part of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Although physically separated from the Nova Scotia peninsula by the Strait of Canso, it is artificially connected to mainland Nova Scotia by the Canso Causeway. The island is located east-northeast of the mainland with its northern and western coasts fronting on the Gulf of St. Lawrence; its western coast also forming the eastern limits of the Northumberland Strait. The eastern and southern coasts front the Atlantic Ocean; its eastern coast also forming the western limits of the Cabot Strait. Its landmass slopes upward from south to north, culminating in the highlands of its northern cape. A saltwater estuary, Bras d'Or Lake, dominates the centre of the island.
Awesome, That's it. #3. We pretty much invented the Telephone.
The modern telephone is the culmination of work done by many individuals, all worthy of recognition for their contributions to the field. Alexander Graham Bell was the first to patent the telephone, an "apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically", after experimenting with many primitive sound transmitters and receivers. However, the history of the invention of the telephone is a confusing collection of claims and counterclaims, made no less confusing by the many lawsuits which attempted to resolve the patent claims of several individuals.
Alexander Grahm Bell who used to live here now has his own museum in Cape Breton. #4. We had the first successful flight in Canada. (The Silver Dart)
Baddeck, Nova Scotia. It was flown off the ice of Baddeck Bay, a sub-basin of Bras d'Or Lake, on 23 February 1909, making it the first controlled powered flight in Canada. The aircraft was piloted by one of its designers, John McCurdy. The original Silver Dart was designed and built by the Aerial Experiment Association, formed under the guidance of Dr. Alexander Graham Bell.
Also the Silver Dart is the name of a new space craft that is to be launched from Cape Breton soon. Basically, it's a recreated fortress from the 1700's
The Fortress of Louisbourg (in French, Forteresse de Louisbourg) is a Canadian National Historic Site and the location of a partial reconstruction of an 18th century (1744) French fortress at Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. Britain's North American (American) colonies were getting restless and the efforts by French forces, with aid from their First Nations allies, to seal off the westward passes and approaches through which American colonists could move west soon led to the skirmishes which would develop into the French and Indian War in 1754 and devolve into the larger Seven Years' War by 1756, which also involved all the major European powers. A large scale French naval deployment in 1757 fended off an attempted assault by the British in 1757. However inadequate naval support the following year allowed a large British combined operation to land for the 1758 Siege of Louisbourg which ended on July 26, 1758 with a French surrender. The fortress was destroyed by British engineers in 1760 to avoid its future use by the French and the site was abandoned at the end of the Seven Year's War.
#6. I saw one of Canada's 3 submarines when I was in Halifax once.
Duke Street? I dunno, all those streets parallel to Duke downtown are really steep. ^ Yeah, driving over the Macdonald bridge you can see all the old submarines tied up, they've been sitting there for years :c00l:
