DN reports that the cause is a growing military threat from Russia against Sweden. The nature of the threat and the content is classified as top secret and of "great importance to national security."
Swedish source English source The Swedish Armed Forces press secretary has denied that this is because of one specific event but the supreme commander has changed his official opinion on whether a Russian attack is likely from "unlikely" to "somewhat likely". I personally don't think anything will happen but perhaps a Russian attack isn't as unlikely as many of us believe.
Tensions are definitely hot and it doesn't look like they'll be cooling down anytime soon, that's for sure atleast.
dont the news report bullshit like this every fucking month lmfao gotta fill up that russia is scary quota
Those military folks pining for more funding and more prestige will be pleased.
Pretty much, yeah
Hopefully it will be just another Russian dick-waving situation that ends up in nothing.
At least the appeasement has been kept to a minimum so far.
I know they said it was top secret, but what reasons could Russia possibly have against Sweden? And please don't come with the "ethnical russian protection" meme
iirc Sweden and Norway, as a landmass, is very useful due to its immediate connection to the North Atlantic Ocean. That's all I'm aware of though, and I'm not sure what use Russia would have of that except being closer to the US in terms of... sea?
I know they said it was top secret, but what reasons could Russia possibly have against Sweden? And please don't come with the "ethnical russian protection" meme
Baltic Sea control would be very dangerous in Russian hands.
iirc Sweden and Norway, as a landmass, is very useful due to its immediate connection to the North Atlantic Ocean.
Baltic Sea control would be very dangerous in Russian hands.
don't they have plans for a new missile base on that piece of land that they have between Poland and Lithuania, one that when completed would grant them almost total cruise missile overwatch of the Baltic Sea region? i mean it's not the same as having a proper shoreline but it's something also why is Sweden so concerned right now? i'm not sure if Russia can directly attack them without going through Five Million Meatshields AKA Finland first unless they somehow slam their carrier battlegroup straight into the harbor of Stockholm (note: i'm not a military strategist so i may be talking out of my large intestine)
Russia is dealing with the whole Ukraine Situation and the whole Syrian situation. Why would Russia start a war now?
Why would Russia start a war now?
they wouldn't
Russia is dealing with the whole Ukraine Situation and the whole Syrian situation. Why would Russia start a war now?
It's not as if Russia is utilizing its entire military for both conflicts, if it really wanted to it could probably start a sustainable conflict with Sweden. However I think it's a gigantic stretch to assume Russia will attack Sweden in a military manner any time soon.
To make sure they don't have to stop flopping their dick around so people can see how short it really is when stationary. Won't start a war but as a excuse to keep flopping.
Not sure what you're trying to say with this. It would be foolish to assume Russia isn't a huge power.
Better safe than sorry, they've had bomber planes and jets cruising above us before.
Baltic Sea control would be very dangerous in Russian hands.
yeah pretty much this. gotland is incredibly important for the control of the baltic, and control of the sea would mean it would be easier to economically strangle finland, the baltic states and sweden. plus it opens a greater threat towards denmark and germany. not to say russia has any reason to start a war right now or anything, but a lightning annexation of gotland has always been a very credible threat, especially after sweden crippled their military
I know they said it was top secret, but what reasons could Russia possibly have against Sweden? And please don't come with the "ethnical russian protection" meme
They've always had an eye on land in and around the Baltic sea. Gotland may be a particularly interesting, seeing as it's a large island located in the middle of the sea 100 km from the coast of Sweden. If Russia decided they want it there's not a whole lot we could do.
Sweden used to think about getting nukes during the cold war. Would be a good deterrent.
Might be a good time to join NATO.
That's been highly discussed topic recently, to say the least. It's almost Brexit-like in how divisive of an issue it is.
Sweden used to think about getting nukes during the cold war. Would be a good deterrent.
That's implying we don't have nukes.
If your country is obeying the treaty, they don't.
I live on Gotland, and I ain't scared of no russian. I have my accordion and my vodka ready for when they knock on my door
I live on Gotland, and I ain't scared of no russian. I have my accordion and my vodka ready for when they knock on my door
We will drink it all, and break accordion. Scared yet?
thats very rude
ok, maybe not all the vodka
I know they said it was top secret, but what reasons could Russia possibly have against Sweden? And please don't come with the "ethnical russian protection" meme
Russia has very few warm water ports, Finland and Sweden have a lot thanks to the Baltic.
Sweden would be 6 feet under. I wonder what the implications for Russia would be, Sweden seems too passive to start things.
No seriously, why would Russia attack? It's all fear mongering to get us Swedes to support joining NATO.
The consensus in the military seems to be that a direct war between Sweden and Russia is unlikely, but due to our strategic position (aka Gotland) we're going to be dragged into any potential conflict in the baltic sea anyway.
thats very rude
Don't worry pal, i'll stop him from breaking musical instruments if we attack. Can't promise anything about vodka tho.
