I've seen a few posts with the word "gamer" in it. It seems to be one of those forbidden words that you can't say, or someone will rebuke you for using the word. What's so vile and taboo about using the word? In the first post I saw opposing it, he said something along the lines of "A gamer only takes from the community, this is how it is defined because of how it is used." I don't remember the thread, user, or exact post anymore, but I tried.
As far as I know, the suffix -er is added to anything to make it a noun of a verb. For example, adding -er to the end of teach, making the word teacher. It's a little different with game, however, as it isn't a verb, though I've seen it been used as slang. Adding the suffix -er would make it "gamer". It means "a person who plays games", doesn't it? What substitute is there for the word? Would you say "I am a person who plays video games in general"? Maybe use the word "player" instead?
I have speculated over the reasons, and I do find one. Some people who use the word, are generally unfavorable or disliked. That's all I've ever come across, though.
Edit: I've only seen certain people complain, I don't see the majority of Facepunch against it.
Probably because if somebody calls themselves a gamer, they're priding themselves on it. If there's something you do (for example, golf), then adding "-er" to the end means that you do it well and often (so, golfer). Playing video games well and often is one of those things where you're either respected for it, or looked down on for it.
Yeah, it's pretty much in the eyes of the beholder.
Generally, a "Gamer" is someone who is a "Professional" because they earn money playing games
which in itself is fucking stupid, but the main problem is that all the 12 year olds think that they are Gamers themselves
"IM A GAYMER, I PLAY CoD:MW2"
people generally frown upon the term 'gamer' because it implies that the person is 'better' and of a higher status then other people who play the same game.
this generally makes people irritated because games are supposed to be about having fun and killing time rather then being the best.
Mainly sad fucks call them selves gamers.
Wait, using logic in OP, would I call myself "Basser"?
Mind has been blown.
Personally, I'd like playing videogames to become a part of life just as much as watching movies or reading books instead of thinking of videogame players as an isolated stereotype (which many people connect with the medium and the word "gamer). You don't see people calling themselves "movie watchers" or "book readers", do you?
What's even better are those who call themselves "girl gamers". Wow, you're female and you play videogames? Wow, you really do deserve a special rank in the food chain!
I can understand why people try to distinguish themselves tho, so I'm kinda "meh, whatever" about this whole topic. It's kinda like the hardcore/casual gamer debate, in the sense of a group wanting to separate themselves from the others and taking pride in what they do.

What the fuck are you smoking? Gamer means anyone who plays game regularly.

no, it doesn't, that is "Sad Fuck"
that's the problem
technical term for gamer is "one devoted to playing video or computer games"

Because that's already something else, we'd have the inner-city cool kids beating us up for our lunch money [sp]more[/sp]
I don't think there is anything wrong with it.. :(
It's like saying you're a TV watcher. There's nothing that wrong about saying you like to play games in your spare time but saying you're a "gamer" sort of implies you're part of some group or that it's your defining trait to sit inside enjoying other people's creations.

Bear with the annoying voice, it's actually really good.
Typically, people who I talk to that call themselves "gamers" are people that I find incredibly annoying.
I don't call myself a gamer. I usually call myself a game player, because you play games, you don't game.
I consider myself to be a gamer. Mostly because it's my primary activity of choice and it is the reason why my social life is almost nil. You don't get a very high "cool" rating for being gamer though.
"Gamer" has a negative connotation? Whaaat?
I don't see a need for the label "gamer" though. People don't need much enthusiasm to want to play games. It's an ordinary thing to do nowadays. Where you probably need the word is when referring to professionals. "Which in itself is fucking stupid."

I agree with you though.
