http://www.wpr.org/beloit-police-ask-residents-volunteer-have-their-homes-searched-guns
Police in Beloit are launching a new effort to reduce gun violence in which they're asking city residents to volunteer to have police search their homes for guns. "Gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus is being represented in the media, and we should fight it using the tools that we've learned from our health providers." Police Chief Norm Jacobs said. Jacobs said he hopes some searches will result in the discovery of guns they didn't know were in their own homes. He said that there’s also a chance they’ll find guns linked to crimes.
This article is so wrong on many levels. This pisses me off to no extent. The police have no right to ask you to search your home for guns, Even guns you "think" you dont own. Also comparing gun violence to ebola is stupid as well.
I don't see what's so wrong about them asking, but it's not gonna make any difference. It's not like any criminals would actually accept
Holy shit, they are just registering guns. It's the same as registering cars so they can keep track.
to clarify, they aren't literally comparing it to ebola, but rather how the media portrays the threat of Ebola to America You will never get Ebola if you're in America. But the media sure wants you to think it's a threat to your life. and there is also nothing wrong with this. You can say "No" and that's the end of it. note the word "Volunteer" not the word FORCE is being used. They aren't breaking into your house and searching without a permit. (Not that anyone has ever said that here, or will, but someone will act like this is the case somewhere)
Monumentally stupid way to say it, but there's nothing wrong with gun registration/licensing. They just want people to register older guns.
Monumentally stupid way to say it, but there's nothing wrong with gun registration/licensing. They just want people to register older guns.
There's this phobia that if they find out that some of the guns they own are extremely old/not allowed without additional certification, if at all they will not ask questions. They will take the guns away and you're screwed. This stigma makes sense in Canada where they WERE taking away anything that basically was not a hunting rifle but come on, this is the United states here. Compared to us they have WAY more leeway in which guns they can keep in the locker. My grandfather's shotgun and WWII rifle are buried out in a southern Ontario field somewhere.

Yeah, sorry, how about no? I own one gun legally registered to me, but that doesn't mean police have a right to enter my home and search for it. Go get a warrant or fuck off.

Y'know, you can just say "No, I won't let you", and they won't bother you about it? Can you read or something? It's literally in the first line of the OP

But still. Nothing wrong with saying no. Hopefully police understand this.

Millions of people in those homes. Millions of reasons to say yes/no to a search. Name me one person you know of who would spend the time to go over each of those cases individually and compile a list of people who said "no" in a sufficiently suspicious way to warrant a further investigation. Name me one institution that would do the same thing, and I still have a list of zero people/institutions that would waste the time and money to do something as ridiculous as that. Just say no, be nice, and move on.
Gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus is being represented in the media
:suicide: EDIT: Fixed it
:suicide:
[t]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jqo96RfGa6w/T4DnfEZwP9I/AAAAAAAAAh4/gubYFhFjdEs/s1600/PS3-Store-Gets-Robbed-at-Gunpoint-2.gif[/t] you can't mug a man by threatening to cough on them besides that what Starlight 456's saying in the next post, and what I've said in my first post. They aren't comparing it to ebola, just how the media portrays it.
:suicide:

"Gun violence is as serious as the Ebola virus is being represented in the media,
Nice job only quoting the part that makes them look the stupidest. He is not literally saying that gun violence is as serious as Ebola.
The police have no right to ask you to search your home for guns
Uhhh police have the right to free speech too. Restrictions only come into play when you're talking about what's admissable in court (Miranda, Mapp, etc.).
Different people different ideals and methods, I suppose.
I mean am I totally off base with my thinking here? maybe its my auditor/OSHA inspector/bureaucrat-that-people-dont-like-talking-to background shining through, but a lot of the time you can infer a lot more information from a "No" or a failure to answer than you can from a "Yes" [editline]8th December 2014[/editline] its a "pleading the fifth" kind of thing
It seems to me like they just did this to appease those soccermoms who want to ban anything remotely L shaped. Let them scare their kids into thinking they live in a dystopian police state where it's perfectly okay to report your neighbor for suspected deviant behavior just so they'll stop lobbying to make that actually happen.
Good thing we have this thing called the constitution, that grants us the right to our guns. The moment you start taking guns away from honest people, the whole goddamn structure will collapse.
see ogobongo isn't out for your guns... the red state of wisconsin's police are! If a cop asks to search your vehicle and they have no probable cause, you can say no. If you say yes, they have that right. It's the same shit here.

Third Amendment was gone when they started forcing people out of their homes to perform stakeouts.
I'll invoke every goddamn one but once one goes, every other one will go eventually. Third Amendment was gone when they started forcing people out of their homes to perform stakeouts.
um the 3rd amendment has never been invoked in any supreme court case, there was in incident in las vegas you are probably refering to, and its not yet been established that cops have the right to do that, as well they violated several other laws in the process so they're probably not going anywhere
I'm perfectly fine with the police asking nicely. If you are dumb enough to willingly allow police to search your home, you deserve whatever happens to you.
