Xi, as the nation's commander-in-chief, issued the order over the weekend, which the Ministry of National Defence publicised on its website. It dictates that officers with the rank of lieutenant-colonel or above must serve as privates - the lowest-ranking soldier - for not less than 15 days. Generals and officers will have to live, eat and serve with junior soldiers during the period. "They need to provide for themselves and pay for their own food. They must not accept any banquet invitation, join any sight-seeing tours, accept gifts or interfere with local affairs," said the directive, which covers both the People's Liberation Army and the People's Armed Police.
This isn't really something I expected from China, but cool nonetheless
So who replaces them during that time?
So who replaces them during that time?
Other generals, they don't all have to do it at the same time
Xi Jinping is really beating down on the military 'elite' culture in China. I guess its a good thing for the countries future stability.
what if the us military did this
what if the us military did this
The generals would just not do it like with all the other things they're supposed to do.
this is actually a pretty brilliant idea, all militaries should do this.
All generals should have to do it for a week every 3 months or something.
I wouldn't quite say that. You can't just lump absolutely everyone into the same group. I think it'd be great if all militaries implemented this. Not only would it ensure that the generals and higher ranking officers are where they need to be, but i'm sure it would boost morale among the lower ranking soldiers since it has to be one of the most hilarious things for them ever. :v:
Sometimes I wish big business CEOs would work a week on the production lines or at some other entry position. There was some program on in the UK where they did a similar thing, similar to that Secret Millionaire thing, and it really helped shit.

I know that Marine generals have to renew their marksman qualification tests every so often. [editline]27th April 2013[/editline] Talking about US Marines
I feel like things would be awkward. "DROP AND GIVE ME 20 PRIVATE... please? dont be mad when you are general again..."

[editline]27th April 2013[/editline] Talking about US Marines
A ton of Marine officers are "mustangs" (served as enlisted before going officer), so they already know what it means to be enlisted. Also, in the Army and the Marines, you need to renew your marksmanship qualification every year, on top of a PT test.
Weird to see something like this from the Chinese
Really starting to like Xi. He's doing all these changes (getting rid of 'luxury lifestyles', challenging the closed-door policy, now this). Hopefully he isn't the type to hate Tibet either, though thats just optimism. Here's to hoping he doesn't get assassinated by some ultratraditionalists.
I feel like things would be awkward. "DROP AND GIVE ME 20 PRIVATE... please? dont be mad when you are general again..."
I would assume that you would not be allowed to hold any grudges while doing it.
Interesting, I like the idea.
It dictates that officers with the rank of lieutenant-colonel or above must serve as privates
I bet all the Majors are busy being thankful
Read Privates as Pirates and got interested
I would assume that you would not be allowed to hold any grudges while doing it.
like everone would listen
You could call it a form of corporal punishment But you'd be slightly inaccurate in doing so.

It's never too bad to get back to basics, no?
