[release]Warner Bros. has greenlit its live-action remake of the anime cult hit "Akira" for a late February/early March start, sources tell Variety. In July, Warners tapped Spanish helmer Jaume Collet-Serra ("Orphan," "Unknown" ) to direct at a budget of $90 million, which was brought down from an initial figure of well more than $100 million. Where that budget stands now isn't clear, and Warner Bros. had no comment on the project.
With a greenlight in place, studio can begin shopping for the two main male leads; sources tell Variety that the studio is high on "Tron: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund, who's considered a front-runner. Both Warners and Collett-Sera have been keen on the thesp, but had to wait for a budget and a greenlight to make their move.
Though no offer's been made, insiders say it's only a matter of time.
"Akira," long in development at the studio, has hit several speedbumps over the last several months, including Albert Hughes falling off as director. Collet-Serra was brought on quickly, but working out the budget took about two months, with studio execs and creative execs meeting last week before the decision was rendered over the weekend.
Appian Way's Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran are producing with Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar. It's another big win for Appian Way, which just secrured "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves to helm its "Twilight Zone" pic at Warners.
WB acquired the potential tentpole project for a seven-figure sum from Japanese manga publisher Kodansha in 2008. Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experimentats.
Katsuhiro Otomo, who wrote and directed the 1988 Japanese anime pic of the same name, will exec produce "Akira."[/release]

I do not have faith in who they picked to make it.
E: Hell, I don't have faith at all.
will this even take place in Japan.?
There have been plenty of books, shows, and video games that, when turned into a movie, were either butchered beyond recognition, complete shit, or both.
Why should this be any different?
I am not okay with this. It'll end up like Speed Racer did. Unless Frank Miller did it.
And that's only in reference of Sin City.
this will not end well
Apparently the old film was "widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation and film making in general".
Never heard of Akira until now. It looks pretty interesting. Might give the old film a watch.
The animation in Akira was amazing. The bike war scene is a great example of it:

Anyways, the live action version of Akira will most likely be shit. Movies based off of anime just do not work out well.
I really do hope that who ever is directing it will not butcher the fuck out of it, really this si something that has it's own style that still makes it a great anime movie to watch.

They are butchering it right now, it takes place in NYC, at least that's what I heard. And the names changed, all white cast, loads of bullshit.

You didn't read the article
I never asked for this.

If you're into decent anime's, you should know about Akira, it's a great movie.

Probably future LA.
Edit: What am I thinking?? It's going to be in New York.
Wasn't part of the entire appeal of the movie was the fact it was how it was drawn, being different and of much higher quality than other animes, and knowing all the effort that went in to what your watching?
I can't see any studio putting forth that much effort in to this, at all.

that's funny because the akira anime was an adaptation of a comic book.
that's funny because the akira anime was an adaptation of a comic book.
and not to mention the countless good adaptations from one medium to another. i dont understand just pointing out bad examples of things and calling something that doesn't even exist yet a failure.
DAMN TICKER stop telling me I was mentioned in this thread.
that's funny because the akira anime was an adaptation of a comic book.
It's also funny because that film was directed by the creator of the comic book, whereas this is not.
The movie will probably be shit, but at the very least it'll let more people know that it exists so they can go and check out the original.
Same reason I want that live action cowboy bebop movie, even though it'll probably suck.
If this doesn't have any repetitive name shouting, not watching it.

Eh. I don't want a live action one. They wouldn't be able to cast Steve Blum.

I watched Akira when I was younger.
It still does not make a bit of sense to me.
What was it even about?

Dystopian this and that, coming of age, overcoming stupendous adversity, obtaining the power of God and the connotations of that, so-on and so-forth...
The usual stuff
I could have sworn the script for this got leaked a while back and had nothing to do with the original.
