• Saudia Arabia: Woman to be lashed for driving

Typo in title, my bad. A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a woman to 10 lashes for breaking the country's ban on female drivers.
The woman, identified only as Shema, was found guilty of driving in Jeddah in July. Women2drive, which campaigns for women to be allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, says she has already lodged an appeal. In recent months, scores of women have driven vehicles in Saudi cities in an effort to put pressure on the monarchy to change the law. The sentence comes two days after the Saudi leader King Abdullah announced women would be allowed to vote for the first time in 2015. Two other women are due to appear in court later this year on similar charges, correspondents say.
Source
Thank god they found her before she hurt anyone.
"Women will be allowed to vote! But they'll have to walk. And they have to use different voting booths than the men. Specifically, ones designated for them, in the next city over. These booths may or may not actually be counted in elections."

Bet she was speaking while driving as well These women need to be stopped
Haha, what a backwards country.
What do they even vote for in Saudi Arabia?
What do they even vote for in Saudi Arabia?
They vote on whether they love their dictator or not. Those that don't are put on both the naughty list and the political prisoner (to-be) list.
What the fuck? I never thought the blind sexism was THIS bad.
What do they even vote for in Saudi Arabia?
They have to: or else..
Why did so many people rate this funny? It's simply not, it's not one of those adorable news stories where North Korea acts like it's an actual country or something. Seriously, Saudi Arabia is a massive pile of shit. They are a feudal state stuck and desperately clinging to traditions and views the civilized west abandoned around 1900. I was really hoping that we would see them affected by the Arab spring, but unfortunately not.
I think the immense damage she could've caused is worth little more than 10 lashes. Come on.
America's Arabian ally, ladies and gentlemen.
America's Arabian ally, ladies and gentlemen.
Better to have a few friends over there than none at all.
Better to have a few friends over there than none at all.
We can just topple their governments and make new friends.
We can just topple their governments and make new friends.
Because so far that's working out for us.
I was joking we do that for real though
What the fuck? I never thought the blind sexism was THIS bad.
well, it is blind, after all
What do they even vote for in Saudi Arabia?
They don't. The right to vote for women is the illusion of progress. They're having their second election in Thursday... the second since 1963. And women won't be able to participate in this one, they have to wait until the next. As one Saudi women's activist said "what can be given can be taken away." Never mind that voting doesn't mean anything in the first place. Anyway I posted a long explanation of why the voting thing is a fraud in the thread about it, if anyone's interested they can go read it.
lashes? is that like whipping? :S
lashes? is that like whipping? :S
no
But... But... I thought Saudi Arabia was a cool country.
no
What are you talking about? It is a "whipping"
lashes? is that like whipping? :S
Yea, it is. It's usually done with either a cane or a whip, and can be done over or under clothes. Either way is incredibly painful and can leave horrible wounds and scars.
This just in, someone got punished for breaking the law.
This just in, someone got punished for breaking the law.
This just in, freedom is speech now is illegal, you are now breaking the law.

You come across as a little ignorant.
On the other hand, they probably have really low accident rates.
This just in, freedom is speech now is illegal, you are now breaking the law.
Wrong. As defendant of the set laws, he is most probably speaking within his rights.
I don't see how women could be any worse at driving than men. My mom is an excellent driver, she drives far better than most people. Never had a single accident since...ever i think. (or atleast not in my lifetime(i'm 18))
It's not about women being bad drivers (at least not technically), it's about the fact that Saudi Arabia is more or less keeping women down and forcing them to keep following interpretations of sharia law in the dumbest places. For example, driving.
