Anyone who bitches about corporate greed when it comes to F2P games doesn't seem to understand the cost of actually producing and running the game. Valve has 4000+ servers for Dota 2 which would cost a huge amount of money to run so that is why they release hats every other update. League of Legends would probably have a comparable if not greater server costs as well.
Merrill said that it was “pretty frustrating” to be accused of greed, pointing first to League of Legends as the only Western free-to-play game “core gamers actually really like”.
Your main competitor is a western F2P game which does a better job of it by selling cosmetics than by selling items that directly effect gameplay elements (i.e. heroes).

Not like that other MOBA. Downing of the Ancients, I think it's called?

The original DotA was a custom map/mod, not a game with a f2p model.

Can we just talk about that last point? LoL is ten to twenty times worse than any other MOBA/doterlike in the genre just because it has the most tedious grinding piece of shit system actively restricting you from playing the heroes you want.
It only takes you a whole year and a half to grind for that hero you want to play as you play the heroes that you don't and thus lose interest in the game. That's probably the main reason why I jumped LoL and just started playing Dota2.
The IP grind wasn't this bad when I first started playing, where they gave compensation at times and the IP gain was simply better. I think if it wasn't for that me and my buddies might've just stayed away from LoL entirely in its early year.
I know they've gotta pay the bills and shit, but I feel way more inclined to spend money on Dota 2 simply because it offered me ALL of the gameplay straight up and not bit by bit...
Is it even possible to have a LoL thread on FP without some dumbass stirring shit up?
/v/ could do it and there you're allowed to tell people to kill themselves and flame with no restraint.
If you go and read the post on reddit, the main criticism is directed towards the fact that a single person, in his spare time, managed to make a better, more stable, less CPU intensive client for the game, which Riot failed to do in a much longer amount of time.
Merrill then goes off on a completely unrelated rant about "greed".

No, they couldn't. LoL thread belong in /vg/, anyone that starts a LoL thread in /v/ is baiting.
Besides, he does have a point, he's no trying to start anything.
Ignoring the problems with gameplay, that are design choices, the other problems with LoL could be solved using more money. Upgrading the engine, making a solid client that is not separated from the main game, huge IP grind to name a few.
One thing I dislike the most of League of Legends is how pricey it is to get a new character, and I have to still relay on the free character rotation to try them out or to grind out the IP to get the cheaper ones. That was my goal until I stop playing moba games all together after switching from moba to moba, contently getting frustrated at people blaming me for being a bad teammate for getting too many deaths, contently getting reported for bullshit that I've didn't do, continue to lose at a consecutive rate, and continue to tag with people who don't even speak English and become poor teammates who feed the enemy. I stop playing moba games after dealing with the ignorance of people and my lack of applied perfection, and vow never to play another moba game, as I cannot experience any fun in this game due to the massive toxic community that is worst then the call of duty community.
Fans complaining about the servers, they don't appreciate what they get.
I mean, why cant you just do something else for an hour or two whilst the server is having down time?

Yes they could, I was there to witness it.

You want to see greedy Free to Play games, Look at TOR. It's fine if you sub, but if you don't? You'll pay out your ass for a single convenience, or a necessity like a pass to do flashpoints, and even those expire in a week
LoL as far as the gameplay goes is the same experience whether you spend money or not a dime, therefor I would never call it a greedy game

do you realize that people mostly buy champions with IP (in-game cash won from matches)?
actually i like that model more than getting all the heroes instantly, i can learn the game more gradually by unlocking them one by one
[editline]2nd January 2014[/editline]
the only thing you HAVE to buy with riot points is a champion skin, ward skin or an icon
I personally think Riot are greedy, especially with the amount they're raking in and doing nothing for the game.
Just releasing new skins. Wow thanks riot more things to spend my money on.
Some parts are pretty BS money-grabby though. Don't get me wrong, they put hella work into the new (expensive) skins and the new champs, but the older re-textured skins are pretty shitty. Oh and the runes system, fuck the runes system, and IP boosts with em.
Riot was far more generous few years ago.
Most new champions that were getting released costed 3k instead of 6k, you'd get more IP per game and there were more random IP rewards(e.g. servers were down for a day and suddenly you'd get a 3 wins IP boost).
Rune system existed because the champions were really fucking cheap, there were like 4 champs that costed 6k IP back then. There had to be more stuff to buy with IP because otherwise you'd easily have every champ.
Since then they reduced the IP gain and released even more expensive runes. Every new champion is 6k and recently they've been releasing more and more skins for 1350 RP instead of 975 RP.
And RP itself is expensive as fuck, 1350 RP is 10 fucking dollars for a single skin.
Not greedy my ass.

You're saying that having all heroes instantly forbid you to learn gradually?
Does LoL still run out of that shitty client that needs you to load the game engine up again every time you start/spectate a game.

Yes.
Was the Wintermint (custom client) really that good as it was before being taken down?
Was the Wintermint (custom client) really that good as it was before being taken down?
Riot I believe are considering hiring the guy IIRC
Was the Wintermint (custom client) really that good as it was before being taken down?
Wintermint was just too good. I'm still baffled with the fact that, while the penalty for leaving a match during champion selection exists, there's no way of doing it without closing the client.
Was the Wintermint (custom client) really that good as it was before being taken down?
It was apparently good enough that they flew the girl, who made it by herself, over to the headquaters to demo it for them.

I was browsing /vg/ the other day actually and thought to myself "why is it that people on facepunch cant be as cool as this"
i mean fuck guys, they barely have any rules and they keep it more civil than most of the threads here, that's sad
greed is only allowing like 10 'champions' to be picked per week
anyone who spouts "b-but you can buy the champs with ingame currency!!!" and "just google what the champs do so when you can buy one you'll know what they do!!" is full of shit and suffers from fatal fanboyism and lack of brainpower
someone did the math on how much time it would take to buy every champion with the free ingame currency, and it ended up being somewhere around 1435 hours. that's assuming every game is the minimum time for a game (20 minutes), but most are usually double that. that assume all of those games are wins as well. that's also not including runes, which hinder you greatly if you don't have any. riot's pricing system is extremely greedy, no doubt.
Im not saying lol is bad, and i understand why people like playing it, but when i played it for the first time it was a huge letdown for me that I couldnt try the champion that looked fun without paying for it , grinding or waiting for it to come to rotation

Because there's a lot of things here that stop us from being like that, like having Usernames, join data, post count, gold membership, a post rating system and mods.
If someone posts something I disagree here I can't simply ridicule them and have them verify my double digits.

User names and join date make threads about League of Legends or DOTA2 turn into wars about which game is better?????????
