BERLIN — European media reports say a Canadian tourist has been arrested in Berlin after making a Nazi salute in front of Germany's parliament.
Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reports a 30-year-old man from Quebec was standing on the steps of the Reichstag with his right arm raised in Hitler's infamous salute as his girlfriend photographed him.
The newspaper says police arrived within seconds, handcuffed the man and took the memory card of the camera.
The Canadian tourist risks being formally charged with making a forbidden gesture, which could result in him being jailed for up to six months.
But the Telegraph newspaper reports the man was freed after several hours in police custody after paying bail. The report says it is understood he will be let off with a fine and a warning
Displaying any gestures or symbols of the old Nazi regime is considered a serious crime in modern-day Germany.
the fuck?
Even if Hitler was bad, 6 months?
Was it actually a forbidden gesture or was he pointing out something to friends/etc.
Sounds like he was just doing it as a joke.
Still, that's a pretty stupid and insensitive thing to do there.
Insensitive and stupid but he shouldn't be arrested for it. These kinds of laws are just counter productive.

He was standing on the stairs of the Reichstag doing the Nazi Salute, as Hitler did when addressing the troops.
Yep thats the law there. speaking of experiance
Wow, I thought it was just an urban legend or something that the Nazi salute is forbidden.
It's stupid, you can't just forbid it and pretend it never happened; most of the people who are to blame are dead now anyway so it doesn't affect Germans.
bahahaha what a legend

They're deeply ashamed of what they did in the past.
They don't want people supporting it.
Wow what a bunch of fascists.
Yay for the justice system!

they're deeply ashamed of being facists, so they'll jail anybody who reminds them of it
I can picture people in the Canadian embassy now.
"He did WHAT? Oh god hahahaa"

They actually did it to prevent neo-nazi political parties from forming. It's one of those well-intentioned laws that everyone has forgotten the purpose of.

I know that back when I had a german exchange student over here, people mentioned the law against the salute, and then asked him if people actually saluted
He just said "No they don't, because it's stupid"
Yeah, but I think putting a law on it is plenty fine. We don't have laws like that in the US because we've not had a revolution for, oh, 300 years.
The law was passed to keep the nazis from reforming, and it's worked. It may be a bit outdated, but I have no say in what stage germany is in for reforming that law
He was given a fine. Better than ending up in jail.
Looks like he'll NAZI the sun for a very long time.
a "forbidden gesture"? What the fuck?
He should have Hailed a Taxi instead
a "forbidden gesture"? What the fuck?
Most countries have them.
In America, for example, walking around in public fondling your balls would get you a ticket for public indecency because it's a forbidden gesture.
A fine would've been MUCH more acceptable than jail time. God damn.

Well lets relate it to the origin of these gestures to differentiate them. Fondling your balls relates to public indecency, giving the Nazi salute relates to a forbidden political ideology. I'd think streaking isn't really the same as being a neo-nazi.

They said he was probably just gonna get a fine and a warning. They understand it was just stupid like anyone else.
Would it be more acceptable to bring a USSR flag and wave it around?

Well who cares if a neo-nazi party froms nobodys going to vote them in power, the german public isn't going to vote for them and i doubt they'll have much support anywhere else.
It's a stupid law.
I was drunk in copenhagen, doing heils with another drunken skinhead. Fondled my balls like always and the cops even nudged at me for pissing in a corner...I asked him to stop looking at my penis, that made him go away, hah.
Yet still, none of that was very cool, but shouldn't give jailtime, no way.
Doing this in front of the Bundestag is an insult to our todays country. You can't tell me he wasn't aware of where he is and what he is doing.
It's like yelling "Allah Akbar" in front of the White House.
Das ist verboten!

We have a Neo-Nazi party, two even. The Deusche Volksunion (DVU) and the Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands(NPD) and they are gaining members and support from the poorer/working class people of our country, mainly in the ex-soviet areas.
The gesture itself is not forbidden, using it in front of the Bundestag is an insult to the country and that is forbidden.
Another point of preventing people from using it is not to hinder the forming of fascist partys but rather to prevent them from using old, well know symbolics and thus to disturb the ill-minded/semi-nostalgic ideology they are using to influence stupid people.
America, fuck yeah.
America, fuck yeah.
North America represent
I find that a pretty ironic law and it's not going to stop people from believing in what they want to.
