So I'm looking to upgrade my MB so I can upgrade my ancient dual core 2 duo to an i5, and perhaps later down the line go from a 650 Ti to a more powerful GPU. I've been told the H81M-S1 was a great board, so I'm wondering if it will limit my subsequent upgrades or if it's fine.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I may, if that's not too much hassle. That MB doesn't support it?

If so, is there another MB in that price range that does?
The H81 chipset is a terrible one. B85 is entry level for wanting to do anything, but for an i5 I'd recommend H87. If you want to overclock, you'd need a z87 though.
So I did some look around and this is what I ended up with, trying to take your tips into account;
MB: MSI B85M-P33 V2
CPU: AMD FX-8320
GPU: GTX 770
RAM: Kingston DDR3 8GB
All for 500€ (690 USD) What do you think?
The processor will not work with the motherboard. Get a Haswell i5.
Is an i5 4430 fine?
Also there's no other compatibility problems other than this, right?
I would suggest the 4570 or 4670 if in budget, but if not the 4430 will work well.
Yeah if I want to upgrade to a 770 I'll have to go easy on the CPU I guess.
Yeah. You'll still be solid.
One last thing, a PSU of 600W should be enough, right? I did a quick estimate and in the worst case it'd need about 470W or so.
Make sure if you get a i5 that is not the 4670K get a h87 board and if you do get a 4670K get a Z87, it's for overclocking. And yes a 600W is more than enough it will be fine. Which PSU are you looking at?
I already have it, I think it's a Biostar. So a H87M-P33 should do the trick, right? No compatibility problem whatsoever?
What case are you using?
I think it's an Antec Twelve Hundred V3. I bought it used so I'm not sure of the precise model but it looks like it's the one.
Well thats a full tower and putting a micro atx motherboard in it like the one you listed is kinda silly, not that it wont work just it's better just to get a atx motherboard. I would suggest a Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H
It's a great board, I have it and can say I have had zero problems with it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128603
Yeah you're right, it's a rather big case. I guess I'll go with that one then.
Thanks for the help!
Can you tell us the exact model of your PSU it could be an IED and could possibly fry your whole system
I was mistaken, it's actually an Akasa ak-p600ag8-sl. Is it fine? What's the difference between PSU and IED?
A PSU is a power supply (unit) while an IED is an improvised explosive device
The latter is usually branded as a PSU at cheap prices, ie 10-30$
I see... Is mine at risk of blowing up my whole rig? I've been using it for several years now and it doesn't seem to have done any damage so far.
Akasa seems to be akin to something like Raidmax. They put out products that usually work decently, but not nearly up to the standard of a Seasonic, and below that of a Corsair or Rosewill as well.
I would try to fit a corsair PSU in your build. Their PSU's are amazing.
Corsair's are mid-high end. For your uses they're excellent for the price, but they really start lacking at high wattages
Mine is still somewhat reliable, though?
yeah, what they are saying is that there are better options out there, but yours will do fine
