The Beijing Police Department posted a strange series of messages on China’s Twitter-like service, Weibo, Tuesday entitled “Women Drivers Please Take Care to Avoid These Mistakes.” The post is a list of sexually discriminatory so-called “habits” of female drivers to be avoided. Not surprisingly, the suggestions have outraged many. “Some women drivers lack a sense of direction and while driving a car they often hesitate and can’t decide which road to take,” said one post from the police. “Once they realize their mistake, they cause accidents by spinning the steering wheel in a panic.” Women drivers when driving alone, the post later noted, “are not able to find the way to their destination, even if they’ve been there many times.” The posts appeared on the Beijing police’s verified Weibo account which has nearly 6 million followers.
That kind of idiocy being put out as official messages ought to piss folks off.
China is like 50's America mixed with the industrial revolution.
China is like 50's America mixed with the industrial revolution.
More like Gilded Age America, what with the dangerous food, drink and medicine. The 50s might have been balls, but at least there was an FDA.
I understand that on the outside it sounds completely idiotic and sexist, but surely if they're the police force, wouldn't they have some data to back this up? I mean there would be no reason to make such announcements if they didn't have some kind of data showing them that something is happening. Maybe it's something as simple as they've had to respond to so many more accidents involving female drivers than they've had to respond to accidents involving male drivers?

Female drivers in China are probably not on average taught as well or at all to drive or navigate correctly
“This is discrimination! Many male drivers are idiots, too,” I love this response. It's not that women aren't stupid, it's that EVERYONE is stupid!
No. Profiling.
We profile arabs at the airports for a reason, there is legitimate data showing that they've historically been more likely to cause problems on aircraft. I do not at all disagree with profiling when there are legitimate reasons and solid and consistent data behind the profiles. Special agents for the FBI have been using profiling to catch career criminals for quite a long time, if there wasn't some legitimacy there then they wouldn't employ such a tactic.

That's not the worst part, I heard the majority of accidents are blamed on Asian drivers.
hahaha i love this sentence. it just sounds like it's taken out of a superserious study they must be horrible pilots then as soon as an arab sets afoot on an aircraft it immediately stops working
Dude, when it comes to driving its shown that younger men are more aggressive leading to them having more accidents.
I guess it depends on which study you quote. http://www.ns.umich.edu/Releases/2011/Jun11/sivakgenderstudy.pdf
Objective: This study examined gender effects in six geometric scenarios of 2-vehicle crashes in which an involved driver could potentially ascertain the gender of the other driver prior to the crash. Method: The actual frequencies of different combinations of the involved male and female drivers in these crash scenarios were compared with the expected frequencies if there were no gender interactions. The expected frequencies were based on annual distance driven for personal travel by male and female drivers. Results: The results indicate that in certain crash scenarios, male-to-male crashes tend to be underrepresented and female-to-female crashes tend to be overrepresented. Conclusions: The obtained pattern of results could be due to either differential gender exposure to the different scenarios, differential gender capabilities to handle specific scenarios, or differential gender expectations of actions by other drivers based on their gender. The current lack of information on gender exposure in different scenarios, scenario-specific driver skills, and driver expectations based on other drivers’ gender prevents ruling out any of these possible explanations.
Beijing, finish your list. That's only the tip of the iceberg with what's wrong with my aunt when she drives. Get to the part where driving into a large dust cloud is a bad idea because it could be a street sweeper or that big turtles can't get out of the way as fast as rabbits can.
I can't help but giggle at this. Some drivers are just bad, no matter the gender, while some are fucking maniacs. My own mother is relatively nuts behind the wheel. She multitasks like crazy and road rages, while steering with her knees, flipping people off as I laugh next to her. There's an interesting point actually... Europe, and presumably other western cultures, discourage doing anything while behind the wheel in order to ensure safety on the road, while in the post-soviet nations the status quo maintains that a good driver must be an efficient driver and thus be able to do everything they need behind the wheel. It's a relic from the soviet times when driving instructors apparently heavily encouraged multitasking for some reason.
“Some women drivers lack a sense of direction and while driving a car they often hesitate and can’t decide which road to take,” said one post from the police. “Once they realize their mistake, they cause accidents by spinning the steering wheel in a panic.”
Holy shit my mom did this all the time. When I was a kid I was scared shitless driving with my mom because of this shit. Not to say all women are like this of course.
no no no it's a reflex from cave man times, when cave women were driving their cars during the course of human evolution they had to be on the lookout for berries to feed their families and as such are easily distracted by bright colors when driving (especially pink) its all in that one study that one guy did
Well you can't blame them; it's already a country full of asian drivers, but if there's anything worse than asian drivers it's female asian drivers [sp]I kid, I kid[/sp]

In my experience I can´t even form an opinion because I never met an asian who drives a car. More people should take first hand experience into account instead of hearing it from other sources such as sensationalist tabloids.
Female drivers in China are probably not on average taught as well or at all to drive or navigate correctly
Drivers in many industrialising asian countries are not thought at all and it doesn't matter what gender they are. Have you ever looked at driving tests in India? China? Others.
“This is discrimination! Many male drivers are idiots, too,” I love this response. It's not that women aren't stupid, it's that EVERYONE is stupid!
Well, to be honest, everyone IS stupid.
