TSA failure: Investigators able to smuggle weapons past airport checks in 95 percent of tests
An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials.
The series of tests were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who pose as passengers, setting out to beat the system.
According to officials briefed on the results of a recent Homeland Security Inspector General’s report, TSA agents failed 67 out of 70 tests, with Red Team members repeatedly able to get potential weapons through checkpoints.
In one test an undercover agent was stopped after setting off an alarm at a magnetometer, but TSA screeners failed to detect a fake explosive device that was taped to his back during a follow-on pat down.
And this is who we rely on for security.....
Looks like we'll just have to cavity search every brown person instead of just most of them.
More of a reason I don't want to fly.

orders of magnitude more likely to die in a car crash, and it'd be more painful too
So what else is new?
Sounds like we don't need all this intrusive security and that it's doing little.
Time to hire people that are actually competent.

Considering this test was done by DHS, TSA's parent organization, I wouldn't be surprised if they use this as grounds to do exactly that.

sure thing just choose from this massive waiting line of people happy to do a badly paid job for which most people you gonna meet on daily basis will have nothing than sheer hatred for you

Well telemarketing firms don't seem to have much trouble doing that.
I recently flew and didn't realize that I had accidentally left a large metal fork in my carry-on luggage. TSA didn't notice it either. :v:

and here I had 45 minutes wasted last I flew because my laptop bag "was suspicious" and they spent forever running chemical checks on it. They found a pen ink stain in a pocket and my bag came back smelling heavily like vinegar and maybe bleach. Perfect to carry on now and most definitely won't alert anybody when I fly back!
The dream job where you get to be patted all over by security personnel and shove mock explosives up your ass. Sounds like one of those little "social experiments" when you put it that way for some reason.

But there's nothing like whispering into a TSA agent's ear after you get through, "explode my ass" and then they get fired for it.
NBC Nightly just aired the report on this.
The former TSA director said something to the lines of this "The tester's were super terrorists because they knew the weaknesses of the system. They aren't building bombs in the desert of Syria"
... so having these screeners pre-flight in the US is suddenly going to prevent someone from blowing up an airplane originating overseas.
He also insulted terrorists. If you believe that terrorists are idiots who build their shit in the desert of Syria, then you have a huge wake up call coming.
Instead we should continue to harass elderly women, take away toys from kids, burst people's colostomy bags and just make traveling hellacious for everyone!
That's how we stop terrorism!
To be the devils advocate, these guys did have intricate details of the tsa's workings, but still its sort of inexcusable that the tsa had such a high failure rate, in one of the quoted cases, even setting off the detectors and getting a pat down before being sent through with a simulated bomb

Setting off the detector isn't much to worry about. A metal detector went off because I forgot a heavy duty pen in my pants pocket(rarely have stuff in that, I keep it in my jacket normally).

I say we use it as justification to get rid of the TSA entirely. Not only are they a gross invasion of privacy, but they're an ineffective gross invasion of privacy.
Fuck off, TSA. You are why I refuse to fly. I'd rather take my chances on the interstate than subject myself to such invasive security.

do you plan to build a v8 diesel boat any time you wish to travel across continents?

TSA is a complete and utter joke, it mainly comprised of idiots who join in to get easy GS pay.
I've seen people in the TSA who wouldn't make it working at a Mc Donald's, so god knows how they managed to secure a government position.

I'd rather have the shorter lines than all of this bullshit.
i walked through a metal detector with a knife in my pocket and it went off, showed that i forgot my belt was still on, and they waved me through. I was a kid at the time though.

ya but they also got searched by the TSA afterwards and still they didn't find the bomb taped to the guy's back

They say fake explosives...
Well, if they didn't contain the explosive compounds that the sensors are designed to detect, then there is no surprise there.

can you not read? what you just quoted said they failed to find something on his BACK during a PAT-DOWN. It says nothing about chemical detectors.
I'll never forget the time I said I didn't want to go through the radiation detector so I was forced to go to the side where they groped my testicles repeatedly. I was in agony for about a week.

If you pat me down and don't feel a bomb strapped to my fucking back you should retire and go to some dark corner to die
We really need the bad reading rating back
