• Blu-Ray movies - are they worth it?

I've had a PS3 for a while, and I’m now thinking it may be the time to move over to the Blu-Ray format for my movies. Though, I’m in two minds about it. The Blu-Ray offers a spectacular cinematic feel, with the HD visuals able to encapsulate the darkest blacks and the lightest lights and sound quality so pristine, it’s like Barry Scott Cillit Banged your DVD to give it that shiny sound! The most endearing of all is the decline of Blu-Ray movie player price tags dropping from the original £400 to £100, mimicking the beginning of the long reign of the DVD. Though being the "New kid on the block" it faces uphill struggles. For everyone, the most pressing matter...The price, with DVD, now fighting for survival, dropping its price equal to a sandwich and a packet of crisps, while a new Blu-Ray title comfortably fits into a price tag quadruple its predecessor. Also, the rise of on-demand HD movies hints that the Blu-ray may be the final moan of the dying portable movie format and is no more than a short interval until the next generation of downloadable home cinema begins. Will it follow in the footsteps of VHS and DVD and become the new standard of cinematic home entertainment? Or in a rapidly technological advancing age will it become the shortest lived media format generation of our time, with HD movies on demand on upcoming making storage devices redundant? ...plus, who honestly gives a shit about Superbad in HD?
they suck tbh. i prefer hd.
Well, I once spoke a guy that worked at "Media Markt" and he told me that some movies can be worse on Blu-ray. It mostly depends on which movie. Movies that got released on Blu-ray really quick when it was new are mostly pretty poor quality.
Depends on the movie. Some actually do look way better on Blu-ray, but others are just put on for a re-release and look like their dvd counter-part.
I only buy movies on blu-ray that I really want to see over and over and have incredible effects and sound effects, so far that's none. Planning on getting Avatar and Star trek though.
It looks like you answered your own question, OP. Also if you have to view a movie in HD to enjoy it you need to stop watching movies that are only cool for the special effects.
For the most part, older movies will look just fine upscaled with a good player. However, new movies that have been filmed appropriately and actually use the space look pretty damn nice. That said, they're still pretty expensive new and that's one reason I don't own a lot more.
I think the extra few quid is worth it if you have a PS3 because I like movies looking better and clearer Blu-ray players, however, aren't really worth it though. Not quite.

i think there worth it.
they suck tbh. i prefer hd.
Fuck HDDVD I only watch Betamax :colbert:
For the most part, older movies will look just fine upscaled with a good player.
Old movies are HD to you know. Film Reels are like MEGA HD. I think its worth it when you think how much cinema tickets cost
they suck tbh. i prefer hd.
ya XD, i tink dat OP fgt shuld bay an xbock thre sixte cause it have HD and blurai not hd lol halo cool ps3 suck ball [/troll] Wow, seriously, you're an ignorant prick. You've never even seen a blu-ray movie, either that or you saw one on some shitty tv from 1988. Blu-ray IS high definition. Seriously, just leave this forum if you're going to go blindly saying something is better than something you haven't even tried just because it's on your precious Xbox 360.
Blu-ray is well worth it, but you have to be careful because a lot of the transfers vary wildly in quality. Do your research before you go out and buy a movie, check reviews to find out whether the transfer is worth the price.

He never mentioned X-box or 360 anywhere in his post, real mature trolling there bro. Nor did he mention Ps3 in his post. also ps3 fanboy woot.

High Definition is 1080p, 1080i, 720p. That's the RESOLUTION. Blu-Ray isn't HD. The resolution is. I could burn a 480p video to blu-ray and claim it's HD when it's not
God, my friend got a PS3 and he won't shut the fuck up about " Hey lol free online" " Hey lol Blu ray" "Hey lol entertainment blah blah blah". I watched a movie over at his house and it wasn't that amazing :/
Blu-ray is a disc technology designed to store more data. Also, if you want your games to last longer, blu-ray discs are much more resilient to scratches than HDDVD. Use an HDMI cable to connect the television to the PS3 4. Use an optical audio cable for the sound (if there is a home theater system)
Ahh.. I've been waiting for a thread like this for a while.. Been collection for a while now.. And If you enjoy movies. They're absolutely worth it.
Meh, Blu-Ray. I don't really notice the difference.
Old movies are HD to you know. Film Reels are like MEGA HD. I think its worth it when you think how much cinema tickets cost
This. Film reels are 4K resolution, which is 4096 x 3072. If anything, Blu-ray is DOWNSCALED.
I've only watched Casino Royale on Blu-Ray, looked pretty fucking incredible.
I'm new to HD tv and bluray, only recently acquiring a setup. What I've noticed, which may or may not make it 'worth it': I am the type that notices tiny details. Therefore, even just being able to see the texture of a character's clothing makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of a movie. Plus 1 to bluray. Not all blurays are created equal. Just as when DVD first came out, when a lot of movies were just crappy "let's rush this to market" transfers, bluray has also produced junk. Some blurays were made in 1080i instead of 1080P, some are just the DVD version with edge enhancement or sharpness applied to make it seem more detailed, some are just made with old or beat up prints or negatives. The best ones are either from newer movies made with HD in mind already, or older movies that have been restored to some extent. Wizard of Oz comes to mind, it's awesome on bluray. Lots, and I mean LOTS, of stuff isn't even available on bluray. If you are a real movie fan, you love older movies. Most of them aren't out yet. Tranformers 2? Yeah that's out. King Kong(original)? Sorry. So investing in blu ray means living with limited selection for now at least. Lots of stuff isn't made for widescreen. Wizard of Oz, for example, was filmed back when they didn't use widescreen. Therefore when you watch it on blu ray, on your HD tv which is widescreen of course, you either have black bars on the sides or you are one of those barbaric people who stretches the 4:3 image to fit 16:9. On dvd this isn't an issue since who buys an HD tv to watch dvds? One huge advantage of blu ray over dvd is blu ray lossless audio. Dolby True HD or DTA Master Audio, both awesome...when you have an awesome soundtrack to work with. Wizard of Oz? Classic movie but they didn't even record in stereo back then, forget about surround sound. So while the new audio track is very nicely done, you'll only hear the blu ray advantage with newer movies, movies that were recorded in multi-track to start with. Meaning mostly movies from the 80s till now. And then only if you have a receiver that can accept lossless audio or decode it. Upconverted dvds look pretty decent on HD tvs. No, the best dvd does not compare in image or sound to the better blu rays, but they are not bad. So a blu ray player does let you still enjoy your dvd collection at least. For me, it's worth it. I'm patient enough to wait for the classics to trickle out, since I want to own only my favorites anyways, I'm not the type that buys lots of movies just to own them. Online streaming is the future, but we are years away from streaming blu ray quality movies. Most people simply don't have the bandwidth yet.
IMO it depends on the movie but mostly you get what you pay for. I saw Up on blu-ray and it looked incredible.
Blue-Ray is worth it in my opinion. The quality is so much better over regular dvd.

Optical or coaxial can only handle the regular Dolby Digital or DTS.

Blu-ray is fucking incredible with the correct setup.
