I have an iPad which I hardly use (I used it for a few weeks two months ago and haven't picked it up again until today) and i was wondering if jailbreaking is worth the risk; I say risk because i've never done anything like it before and I've heard if you do it wrong you brick your device. What can a jailbroken iPad do that a normal one can't and is it an easy process? sorry if this is the wrong section/isn't allowed etc. etc. To clear up any confusion as to why I would buy something and not use it, I didn't buy it. My grandmother offered to buy me one and I wasn't about to say no haha
I think this is suppose to go in the apple forum but I can be wrong.
It depends what you want to do if your iPad. It's relatively safe to jailbreak, as most of the tools automate it for you. The Cydia installer offers many new and interesting tweaks and apps that Apple would not normally allow, and it also allows you to customize your iPad with features Apple don't want you to have, or have not implemented yet. For example, you can have unlimited apps in a folder, unlike the default which is very low. What iOS version is it running?

Don't worry, jail breaking is easy. I jailbroke my iPod, going to jailbreak my iPad soon.
Quite a late reply, but for 4.2 you're going to want to use the Greenpois0n jailbreaking tool. This is an untethered jailbreak which means you are able to reboot your iPad without having to plug it back into a computer and rerun the tool. Download the application and follow the instructions, and it should do the hard work for you. Once it's done, you should see an app called 'loader' on the springboard. From there you are able to download and install Cydia (The jailbreak app store). Once you've done that, have fun. Remember, jailbreaking will void your warranty from Apple if you have got it.
I used Greenpois0n, and I can say (for anyone worried) that it works fine. It worked for me on my first try and the only thing that scared the hell out of me was the screen when it went black and a ton of white text started scrolling up and down it rapidly. :v:
