Our reader noted his black iPhone 5 saw some “scuffs, scratches and marks” around the band, and he wondered if Apple had any plans to fix or address the issue. Schiller responded:
Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.

While we are at it, have some content from macrumors. "It's a feature"
Who was the first to call it in the original thread? [editline]time[/editline] Good job smurfy!
It's part of the design Truly magical

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.
I don't think that taking it out of the box counts as "with use", Apple.
They're a feature guys god [editline]26th September 2012[/editline] fuck im late
Given the ride in on the container ship I'm not surprised at all. I wouldn't be shocked if the launch batches hit a patch of rough seas on the way over from China, which caused the phones to rub against the packaging and generate the scratches.
thats it. im getting an iphone 5
it just werks
it just werks
seamlessly
Let's watch macfags defend Apple over this
That's why making devices out of aluminum is a fucking BAD idea.
Further scratching your iPhone, there's an app for that.
black iPhone 5 users
Oh good, I should be safe since i'm white.

"The scuffs and scratches are part of our revolutionary industrial design"
yes that just SCREAMS durable when its own packaging can scratch it up
Another reason to get iPhone 6 when it's out, hey, why not.
It's the new hipster trend. Damaged electronics aren't mainstream.
Yeah, that really makes me trust their durability. Saying it's a normal occurrence.
Who was the first to call it in the original thread? [editline]time[/editline] Good job smurfy!
Apple stole my idea, I'm filing a billion dollar lawsuit
It's the new hipster trend. Damaged electronics aren't mainstream.
New age fun with a vintage feel
Apple products are never top-quality on the first run. We've seen this with the Retina Display Macs, the iMacs last year, the Cinema Displays, the iPhone 4S, everything. They'll get the issue in their supply line sorted, and everything will be fine. This is what you get for being an early adopter.

And no this is not what you get for being an early adopter. This thing costs 600 dollars and more.
Does this mean they'l put the price up for "Compact Design"
This is what you get for being an early adopter.
That's not a justification. The early adopters are usually the biggest fans of the company/product and they shouldn't have to deal with something like this. I'd be annoyed if ANY product I bought was not brand-new out of the box. As someone said earlier, a package has one job: to keep the product 100% new until it comes out of the box.
iPhone 5s now with wear and tear as an option when purchasing. It's the next big thing.
iPhone 5s now with wear and tear as an option when purchasing. It's the next big thing.
More like as a feature. The option would be to add extra paint so you won't see the wear and tear as soon.
Does that mean my HTC is fabulous? It looks trashed with all the scratces and ding around the body of it.
Not trying to defend Apple because I know how much hatred runs through Facepunchers' veins for the company but the original message sent to Apple was this: "I love my black and slate iPhone 5, but I've been seeing some scuffs, scratches, and marks throughout the band around the phone along with many others. What should we all do? Any plans to fix this?" IMO the guy's question wasn't very specific to the fact that the iPhone came out of the box with these scratches. Therefore it was very easy for Paul Schiller to bypass that whole idea and simply comment that the device is prone to scratches because of use. If the guy had specifically stated that his device came out of its box scratched, Apple would have commented appropriately. They simply aren't that stupid to ignore such a thing. They are just stupid to the extent that they hope no one will bring it up in a fashion that Apple are obliged to comment on it.
why don't they make their unibodies out of magnesium, anyway?
