So I've had my PC for about 3 years now, and I am currently looking at getting a new one after one of my GPU's died. At the moment I have:
Motherboard - Asus Striker II Formula CPU - Intel Q6700 Quad Core 2.66GHz Graphics Card - Asus GTX 260 RAM - G.Skill 4GB 800MHz DDR2
I used to have two 260's in SLI but one of them overheated. At the moment I'm looking at new specs. So far I have:
Case - Coolermaster HAF 922 Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Graphics Card - Radeon HD 5870
I'm still looking for a Socket 1366 motherboard, because I'm planning on getting an i7. If anyone has any suggestions for anything please share them. Any good i7's, or DDR3 Ram.
what is it going to be used for
you want to upgrade THAT? wtf, your current pc is great, why do you need to upgrade it?
what is it going to be used for
Gaming, Photoshop, General use.
you want to upgrade THAT? wtf, your current pc is great, why do you need to upgrade it?
It's been running slower and slower, and I've fresh installed about 7 times. Also I am running old technology. There's the i-series processors out now, and DDR3 ram. Also money's not really an issue, so why not?
Gaming, Photoshop, General use.
then get an i5 750 instead of an i7, you won't need hyperthreading so you're paying more for nothing
then get an i5 750 instead of an i7, you won't need hyperthreading so you're paying more for nothing
I'm not paying for it. Like I said moneys not really an issue. I don't want to go over the top and get an i7 Extreme and a 5970 though. Just you know, Not mid range, but not the very best, just in-between.

I suggest you get a 5850/5870 immediately and see what you think. You can always get the rest of the new build if you still think it's too slow. An 'i' series processor won't be a MASSIVE improvement over your Q6700, and DDR3 is nothing amazing either, so don't be too expectant. If your Q6700 is at stock speeds then more than likely you can get a lot more out of it via overclocking, if you want. Of course you can just ignore that if you really do like to be careless with your money.

My dad is friends with the company that supplies him with these computer parts and I can get them for very cheap, you can't say you would say no if you had the option.
Here's a comparison: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1782/amd_phenom_ii_ddr2_vs_ddr3_performance/index11.html Ok so it's not DDR2 VS DDR3 2000MHZ, but that's only because I can't find any direct comparisons. As far as I know DDR3 still suffers from quite high timings, whereas the last of the DDR2 modules have some of the fastest. I'm not sure how well DDR3 2000 8-8-8-24 would fare vs, say, DDR2 800 4-4-4-12.
I'm not being careless. At the moment it still takes a while to open certain programs. I don't want it to be instant, but I know it can be faster.
Specifically, you want an SSD for that.

If moneys not a problem, a good 30 - 60Gb SSD would come in handy for killing loading times.
Ssd?
Ssd?
Solid State Drive
u can get a 1Tb SSd for about 3500 :P
u can get a 1Tb SSd for about 3500 :P
I'm not going to get an SSD because the only reasonably priced ones are under 100GB. I'll probably keep my 1TB with all my movies and music on it, and get a VelociRaptor or something for all my programs.
