It's pretty widely accepted that you shouldn't text and operate a vehicle. Especially when that vehicle is a commercial aircraft. Apparently one pilot, though, hasn't taken that advice to heart. And he almost killed a few hundred people because of it.
Upon arrival in Singapore, Jetstar flight JQ57 had to abort its landing at a frightening 392 feet from the ground when the pilot plum forgot to put down the landing gear because he was distracted by his phone. A pilot! Operating a 220-passenger aircraft!
It really sounds like a case of two idiots that shouldn't be operating vessels full of living, breathing humans. Who were almost not so living and breathing. The captain's device started buzzing with message alerts when the plane hit an altitude of around 2,000-2,500 feet. The co-pilot looked over and noticed the captain was "preoccupied." His superior claimed he was trying to unlock the phone to turn it off. Which would have been fine, had he, with his 13,000 hours of flying experience, remembered standard operating procedures like activating the landing gear.
At 1,000 feet, the first officer checked the instruments and felt like something was off, though he couldn't tell what it was, despite his 4,000 hours of flying experience. At 720 feet, a warning sounded in the cockpit to tell the pilots the wheels weren't lowered. By 650 feet, the captain tried to activate the gear, but by that time, an alarm sounded to indicate that the plane had dipped below 500 feet, too close to the tarmac for the undercarriage to get safely into place.
The co-pilot told investigators that by this point he was ready to take the plane back into the air to avoid a crash. At a dangerously small window of 392 feet, that's what they did. And so it came to pass that no one ever flew Jetstar again, the end.
Haha oh wow.
Put. The. Fucking. Phone. Down!
What the fuck is this? It looks like a fan fiction article. Just look at the last line.
I think that internet/technology addiction is becoming a serious problem. I see bus drivers texting while driving, car drivers texting, people texting while ordering food or buying clothes. My dad can't have a meal at a resteraunt with my mum without going on the internet and checking his twitter on his phone. Some people don't seem to be able to just turn their phones off.
i still never understood why people are compelled to use their phones while operating a vehicle
I often nearly forget in FX10, it's hard guys.
"Hey Dave, you ever feel like you forgot to do somethi"
What "small window"
Aircraft can immediately abort a landing at any time. No close call here. Landings are aborted all the time due to weather or some other problem.
OMG LOLZ IM FLYING BABY BUT THATS OK I CAN TALK TO U

Actually the whole thing sounds like a story a serious pilot would tell his child as a bedtime story
and that's only because of the last line

Yes at around 1000 feet or while they are in the holding pattern. NOT when they are on their decent and just a football field away from landing. That is a small window when decelerating at that time period. I highly question your ability to judge distances and physical properties of an airliner on approach. 1000 feet is acceptable 300 is too damn close. THE fucking control tower is at least 150 feet tall ... at least... tell me how thats not a close call?
I thought you weren't aloud to use the mobile network on an aeroplane.
I understand that things become kind of a routine with enough experience in the plane but good lord, really? Takeoff, climb, descent, and landing are the most critical phases of a flight, you'd think someone flying a commercial jet would be on top of their game on the approach.
This can't be real
Passengers can't use their mobile devices while the pilot can?
While flying?

Shit guys!
What is that from? That looks crazy.

Ironically, according to the article, he was trying to turn his phone OFF. :downs:

Uh no a landing can be aborted at any point, even after the wheels have touched down.
I can imagine texting a bit when you are on a long flight and the plane is completely fine. But not when this close to landing.

QFT, Happened to me once when landing in really bad fog. Scariest shit ever.
The title should say Landing Aborted. Flight aborted sounds like they had to turn around and fly all the way back to where they started :v:

I title my threads what the news article is titled as.

If you are in a holding pattern there is no need for aborting a landing since you are waiting for clearance to land in the first place, the only thing that might come close is getting a new runway assigned to your plane, which AFAIK is pretty rare to happen.

It's fake.

the end.
This article is so hostile toward the pilot. He made one mistake in his 13,000 hours of flying and he's branded an idiot? Pilots are people too, and people aren't perfect.
And he almost killed a few hundred people because of it.
Pure sensationalism. That's what alerts and copilots are for, nobody was going to die because of this.
Aren't commercial planes put on autopilot most of the time?

Not for landing or takeoff.
