LANSING — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed laws requiring every public school in Michigan to have epinephrine injectors to treat allergic reactions.
Schools will have to have two epinephrine devices starting next academic year and ensure at least two staff members are trained to use them.
Good, it's odd how schools haven't been required to have these on hand before.
If adrenaline hypos kept handy prevents allergy deaths and whatnot, good on them.
How can you not be trained to use an Epi? If you're too stupid to realize that you just jam it into them, you probably shouldn't be a teacher. The things are designed to be simple.

Not as simple as you might think. If a teacher stabbed it into a major vein, you could easily kill the student.

I suspect it might be more of "Where do I inject this?" rather than "What do I do with this?"
Still, great news, I don't see any downside to this at all.
Ooh, finally something good done by my state. Haven't seen any cases of allergic reactions, but I know this'll prevent more that could have happened.

Its most likely less about how and more about when. Its probably not a good idea to go round sticking epinephrine into random people because people.
can i jab these into my heart like in those crank movies and get superspeed?

You'll get a tingly sensation in your body if you try. Many hyper-allergic people get to try injecting an epipen once just to see how it's done and what it feels like. It doesn't really kill you.
There are instructions with/on the epipen, but I'm guessing the training is more about getting people confident enough to act fast as shit without hesitation because every second could count (same as with CPR).

Are there any major veins in the outer thigh area? They also contain instructions of the epipen, so it shouldn't even be easy to hit a major vein.
Teachers could also take first aid classes every year to make sure they know what they're doing.
Asthma runs in my family, and let me tell you something, having to inject these yourself when you're having a severe attack can fucking suck. I guess it depends on how panic-prone you are but I've had to do it and it can be screwed up so easily.
It's made me a bit more comfortable since both of my sisters have asthma and Asperger's. They can't really do it on their own and during allergy seasons I tend to worry a lot because teachers at our school can be pretty god damn dumb sometimes.
Whoopty shit, Snyder, now lets actually do something about our major cities' budgets.
Don't get me wrong, this is great and all, but it's not as if Michigan is having an allergy epidemic.

i want to do this

can i do this???
We keep 2 of them in our house. Students in my district were required to have them in the nurses office if they had severe allergies/asthma.
No Pulp Fiction references yet? I'm shocked.
I have one. My doctor literally just told me to jam it in my leg and press my thumb down.
i want to do this
can i do this???
Short answer: No.
Long answer: You're gonna have a hole in your heart and chest, so not only are you going to bleed out through your heart, you're gonna have a terrible time breathing, too.
The first successful intracardiac injection was used in 1922, with a few dozen success cases after that[1]. Even though it has been rarely been performed since then, the procedure has undergone a revival of interest. A 1990[2] study had a 50% success rate, with 7% of those patients discharged alive; and concluded that at a cardiac standstill adrenaline injections are worth the risk. Intracardiac injections are perform while the chest is open, usually opened for another procedure, and injected into either ventricle while the heart is under mechanical assistance.

tl;dr While the movies do get it right that an adrenaline injection directly to the heart can be helpful, they don't do it by jamming a huge needle through a chest wall into a random area of the heart.
Don't EpiPens have instructions on the side?
Cool! As someone with a severe peanut allergy and someone who has to carry one of these on me at all time I say it's about damn time.
This reminds me to get a new prescription for mine.

You can train someone to properly use an Epipen in under 10 minutes. It's an entirely simple process.

Actually it's pretty dangerous to inject yourself with epi if you aren't in Anaphylaxis.

Who has time for reading when you're blacking out from oxygen deprivation?

The idea is for the teacher to do it
I'm surprised that basic first aid like this and CPR are not mandatory for teachers. They really should be.

The great saphenous vein is fairly superficial IIRC. It's still fairly easy to teach people how to use an adrenaline autoinjector, it's a 10 minute thing, so this news is good news imo. If I had my way, basic first aid would be a mandatory course for everyone in school - hands only CPR, adrenaline autoinjectors, glucometers, the vital signs, when to call 112 and the information they'll want, and how to use an AED. I reckon you could probably do it in one day per year for the school. Hell, we had adverts for hands only CPR for kids here.
