• Getting new computer soon, need some help.

Hey. So, my computer died a few days ago, and I have no where near the knowledge to troubleshoot and fix it, and getting someone else to fix it for me would cost near as much as a new computer, so I've decided to get myself a newer one. I've got someone who applied for a loan for me, and they say that they should get something around £450-600. So I'm judging my research on a £500 budget, if I get more I'll spend it on the extra kick. However, here is the problem - I have no idea about computer hardware and specs. This means: - The computer will need to be built for me (and shipped to me). - I don't know what I'm searching for, and what is a good price for what I'm buying. - My native resolution is 1980 x 1080 - I shouldn't need any additional equipment such as a monitor / mouse / keyboard / OS. and this is what I'm looking help on: - Good recommendations on prebuilts. - Sites with a good reputation that allow you to customize, and they'll build? This is what I'll be using the computer for: - Gaming. (I want to try to get something that should play games decently for another few years) - 3D Modelling / Rendering. - Photoshop, Flash.etc - Browsing the net and all the usual things. Notes: - I live in the UK. (Shipping / Purchase should be possible for here) - I've previously purchased off www.arbico.co.uk (I'd be cool if there is something good there, but as I said I don't know what i'm looking for.) - My resolution is 1980 x 1050 - I shouldn't need any other equipment (Mouse, Keyboard, OS, Monitor) If you need any more information, tell me and I'll try to provide it for you. If I think of anything else I'll add it up here.
The processor for you would be a i7 or a Phenom2 X6 1055T? Dont know if it fits your budget tho. Maybe get a good Quad core?
2nd paragraph contains my budget info.
2nd paragraph contains my budget info.
Just saw it; A i7/1055T would not fit it.
I've been recommended this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-210-OK What does FP say about it? Which graphics card out of the first 3 choices would be best to get?
Guys, I'm sure you can provide me with a few links to good sites that sell prebuilts with the ability to customize?
Guys, I'm sure you can provide me with a few links to good sites that sell prebuilts with the ability to customize?
The problem is is that there are barely any "good" prebuilds, almost everyone on facepunch will suggest you to either build it yourself or let someone else build it for you.
This is the PC building section, if you come here people will just tell you to make your own PC. This is what you can get for £600 if you build it yourself: https://secure.scan.co.uk/aspnet/Shop/SavedBasket/SavedBaskets.aspx?Id=e1c4dbbe-de48-4594-9b50-b3e4a13264a5#BasketDetails
What this section is for: -Getting help choosing parts for a computer -Getting help building a computer -Getting help with prebuilts -Getting help with laptops
I explained my situation in the first post. I cannot build a computer myself as I don't have the knowledge to do so, nor do I have the time to learn as I require a desktop computer capiable of 3D modelling shortly college starts in a few weeks. I know I can get more for my money by building it myself but it simply is not an option for me right now. I am not asking for a good prebuilt. I am asking for sites with a good reputation that are known to sell well built computers. [editline]08:35PM[/editline] I know you guys are capable of more than just giving out links to the sites, such as finding decent deals on them. But I'm not even asking that much, even though it'd be very helpful.
Here's a compromise, this is a barebone and so all you have to do is install an optical drive, HDD and GPU. This is very easy and the instruction manuals will give you more than enough detail on how to do so. System:http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Barebones/Novatech/BB-9654G2.html GPU:http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Graphics-Nvidia/NvidiaGTX460FermiSeries/Novatech/NOV-GTX460.html HDD: http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/HardDrives-Internal/SATA500GBto1TB/Samsung/HD502HJ.html Optical Drive:http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/OpticalDrives/SATADVDWriters/Samsung/SH-S223CBEBE.html This is quite good, but my original build was better
Wow, that barebone is actually quite nice.
You probably couldn't build it for a lot less, although that PSU is undoubtedly shitty
You probably couldn't build it for a lot less, although that PSU is undoubtedly shitty
True, probably a no-name brand.
This is an unfortunate tendency with pre-builts
Thanks finley. I'll look into it, but really, I don't really want to fuck something up and have wasted hundreds of pounds that I cannot afford to lose. As I mentioned in the OP, someone has helped me out by getting a loan, and if I messed up I'd be in a lot of shit from them too.

[editline]10:23PM[/editline] Installing the HDD and DVD are piss easy, slip in the drives and screw them into place, then connect 2 wires to each drive and done. The video card you just slip in, screw in a single screw, connect the 6 pin and you are done! Then all you need to do is install Windows.
and if I ordered everything there that you linked it would be good to go? I'm sure it's easy to all put together but I have no idea where these wires would go and stuff.
and if I ordered everything there that you linked it would be good to go? Manuals come with it, and if you still have questions ask us.
Yeah. I got all that. I'll do some research. The wires and stuff all come with it, right? and which order should I install the stuff?
http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/ dont believe anyone has mentioned that yet
Yeah. I got all that. I'll do some research. And there is no specific order, when you receive the PC just turn it on once to make sure the PC is in working order and then shut it down, then throw in the HDD, DVD and GPU and you are all set.
Alright. Two more questions, I think: Would it be a 32 or 64 bit OS I need? and Is there any specific sata cables I need (like is there different types?)?
Alright. Two more questions, I think: Would it be a 32 or 64 bit OS I need? and Is there any specific sata cables I need (like is there different types?)?
Get a 64bit OS, always, unless you have programs that only run on 32bit, and there is only 1 type of sata cable.
ok, thanks. [editline]10:57PM[/editline] Alright, another question: I've opened my last computer to take a look at how everything is plugged in, seems pretty straight forward, except, I'm looking at it and there are yellow black and red wires everywhere, I'm guessing these all come from the PSU, and that there will be free slots for the other stuff. Am I right about this? If I am, how do I know which ones to use? I know the one that goes to the graphics cards have a certain number of pins but the others all look alike. [editline]11:16PM[/editline] Just took out my graphics card and inserted it again. Pretty easy, just need to know the answer to that wires question.
Apparently novatech are a shit brand for graphics cards, is this true? [editline]12:13AM[/editline] wouldn't this be better? http://www.ebuyer.com/product/227499 [editline]12:27AM[/editline] and why do I need two sata cables? shouldn't I only need one if i'm getting one harddrive? What else needs one?
Building stacks of questions here. A lot of people have been recommending the 5770 GPU to me instead of the one above, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with everything; case, psu.etc? Does anyone know if it is?
The optical drive needs a SATA cable methinks but it should come with the optical drive.
Building stacks of questions here. [editline]11:16AM[/editline] The cards are about the same, however the one you metioned has mini-HDMI instead of regular HDMI.
So some people are saying that one is better than the other, now I don't know which to get. :v:
460 easily beats the 5770: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/12/nvidia-geforce-gtx-460-768mb-gpu-review/10
