Cool, I never got to play the first one. Would it be a better idea to play this or find a PS1 copy
Anyone know if this is supposed to be the kind of remake for updating graphics and assuring compatibility with modern operating systems, or the kind of remake that actually changes parts of the game (like level design, mob spawns, etc)?

I'm confused. You mean HD port, right? It's gonna be the GameCube version with 16:9 and better lighting.
The GameCube remake is quite different from the PS1 version.
Are there gonna be black bars in 16:9?
-snip-
It is an HD version of the gamecube remake, which is pretty much a serious re-imagining of the game.

First one is pretty great, both versions are excellent; but it depends on what you want more.
REmake is more in tone with the modern games like RE4 in terms of taking itself serious and having less cheese/better production.
So, just how far did they go with the "HD" part in touching up the visuals? I remember seeing that they touched up a few character models, but they didn't seem to touch up the pre-rendered backgrounds that were more than a decade old.

There are pictures on steam page
I cannot wait. I've been waiting to prepurchase this for awhile.

No, in 16:9, the game's camera will scroll based on your position. The option to play in 4:3 with the black bars is also included if you dislike scrolling.
And some shameless self promotion: I made a thread over on General Games Discussion if you want a bit more information here! In my opinion, the REmake is the only way to experience this game. The PS1 version is still playable certainly, but it's just blown away by the new version.

As far as I know, they didn't have the original backgrounds saved (Remember, they're mostly prerendered) hence why the game scrolls in 16:9. That said, I know they've gone and altered some of the backgrounds and added in post processing effects and 3D models to spice up the game visually. I cannot say for sure how many backgrounds have been altered in this way.

Most likely not.

Yeah, it looks exactly the same. Can't tell the difference. Oh wait.
it looks like shit, they ran the backgrounds through some sharpness filters just like what they did to re4 hd
They effectively did the opposite of what Square-Enix did for the Final Fantasy X HD remasters. Now, FFX didn't have many pre-rendered backgrounds, but if they'd just ported the game over to the PS3 their low resolution would've stuck out like a sore thumb, so they used the original artwork uncompressed (or far, far less compressed in comparison at least) to maximize the detail properly.
Whether they lack the original artwork/files/source or what, I don't know, but Capcom just took the already-compressed backgrounds from the original Gamecube release of REmake and legitimately did filter them, which didn't turn out too well for the quality arguably and is far more lazier. But then it's Capcom, I sort of expect this shit by now while S-E actually went above and beyond expectation efforts. Personally i'm more bothered by the stupid yet somewhat understandable letterboxing method they use for 16:9 play.
Keep in mind that Capcom has priced Resident Evil at $20. While I wish they would have gone a step above; I still think the game looks great. For the asking price, I think it's fine. Really I'm just glad it's coming to PC.
FFX Remaster costed $40 when it released.

Gamecube copy. This is basically a dubious port of the NGC remake with the screen zoomed in to emulate widescreen instead of letterboxing.

Except this version looks better, probably plays better, is only a few dollars more expensive than the Gamecube version unless you already have it or find it at a flea market, and doesn't require a Gamecube to play.
I want a version of Resident Evil Zero, every time I try to finish it, whatever copy I have disappears. Without fail.

Rumor has it that an HD port of zero is already being worked on.

This by a mile.
REmake is probably the best remaking of any video game in history. It blows RE1 out of the water even though it is RE1.
REmake is the 2nd best RE game (RE 2 is the best)
now everyone who didn't have a gamecube has a chance to play it
Hopefully if this is successful, Capcom will finally remake RE 2 and 3
Will this look good on a 1440p monitor?
For $20? Lmao.

The fact it zooms in and moves the camera up and down by itself instead of having letterboxing is a deal breaker for me.
You may as well get an emulator to play the gamecube version, in my opinion. It's not a very taxing game and at least you'll see the whole screen instead of it being zoomed in.
There is no PC version of RE1, so I'm happy with this

No it doesn't.

Resident Evil 4 didn't take itself that seriously though.

the upscaled the background and ran them through a noise removal filter. it looks awful
it looks like they even created a blurred model filter to make the models fit in with the awful oil painting looking backgrounds.
don't buy this until modders put the original gamecube content back in. because literally just upscaling the textures would look better than the awful filters they've used.

first look like screenshots from a capture card.
run the game in a gamecube emulator and you'll see much better stuff than those first pictures.

seriously look at this

I must not have an eye for this sort of thing because the HD remaster looks fine to me. It's not a significant improvement, but it does look better when compared to the Gamecube original.
I like how everyone's bitching about the graphics of a game ported from the Gamecube
