Lawyers acting for Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and other female stars whose private images were hacked have threatened to sue Google for $100 million. A number of female celebrities - including Kim Kardashian West, Kate Upton, Amber Heard and Selena Gomez - have had their iCloud accounts targeted and had intimate photos shared on websites Reddit and 4Chan but legal representatives for over a dozen of the women has slammed the online giant for allegedly failing to remove the images and "making millions from the victimization of women". Lawyer Marty Singer has written a sternly-worded letter to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, as well as Eric Schmidt and Google lawyers accusing them of "blatantly unethical behavior". According to the New York Post's Page Six column, the document goes on to claim Google has failed "to act expeditiously, and responsibly to remove the images, but in knowingly accommodating, facilitating, and perpetuating the unlawful conduct." It added: "Google is making millions and profiting from the victimization of women." The lawyer pointed out his firm sent a notice to remove the images four weeks ago, and several more since, but many of the photos are still on BlogSpot and YouTube, which are both owned by Google. He added: "Google knows the images are hacked stolen property, private and confidential photos and videos unlawfully obtained and posted by pervert predators who are violating the victims' privacy rights ... Yet Google has taken little or no action to stop these outrageous violations. "Because the victims are celebrities with valuable publicity rights you do nothing - nothing but collect millions of dollars in advertising revenue ... as you seek to capitalise on this scandal rather than quash it." Do they not realize once a picture is up, it's NEVER going to get removed? Sure, it may be removed from a site. But if the picture is saved on a computer, it's over. Google can't do jackshit about it, except hack into computers and start deleting it.
Yes, great idea, let's make Google censor the Internet because stuff you uploaded to the Internet escaped your control. The last thing we need is America setting a precedent that Google can be forced to censor its index, like the EU's right to be forgotten (which immediately began being abused). Better idea: If you don't want the Internet to see your nude photos, don't upload them to the Internet.

It isn't google's job to police the internet and thank goodness for that or we'd all have mandatory google+ accounts
Shouldn't they sue Apple instead?
Since people aren't able to sue "the internet", so they're all suing Google.
what about bing, pretty sure they have the same pictures
-snip-
Celebrities are pretty dumb
what about bing, pretty sure they have the same pictures
People actually use Bing? It's a joke. I know they do, but Google has >80% search market share; it's not a true monopoly in any sense, but for many users, the Google Search box is how they get to anything on the Internet (seriously, "facebook login" searches caused this). These celebs are going at the easiest source to get at the pictures, since actually taking the pictures down is impossible. It's a situation with horrible consequences for the Internet as a whole, but if you want most people to not be able to easily find something, you stop them from finding it through Google.
Shouldn't they sue Apple instead?
I mean, it's not their fault for enabling automatic photo uploads [sp]It is their fault to not managing the brute force attack[/sp]
I mean, google is just a search engine. Unless they're specifically hosting the image I don't see how these people have any legal authority. They'll need to go after the individual site that is hosting it or the hosting company. It isn't so much censoring, it controlling their "property" just because it leaked on the internet does not change the fact they really have the rights to the images. But suing for 100m is a bit crazy. While I feel bad for these people, its on the internet and there isn't much that can be done now. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people who saved the images just for the sake of reuploading them if they get taken down. Best thing to do is learn from this, move on, and let it be. Hardly anyone is taking about this anymore and hardly anyone cares. If it is already like this months after the event, no one is going to care after year. Hell I completely forgot this shit happened to begin with.
It isn't google's job to police the internet and thank goodness for that or we'd all have mandatory google+ accounts
We kind of need them for Youtube anyway.
what about bing, pretty sure they have the same pictures
Don't forget DuckDuckGo and Yahoo as well.
We kind of need them for Youtube anyway.
Not really, we only use youtube because everyone else uses it. It's easily replaceable if it's gone, like twitch -> hitbox
Don't forget DuckDuckGo and Yahoo as well.
Heck, some of the pictures were embedded on here, that means even Facepunch could be sued :v:
Shouldn't they sue Apple instead?
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Apple already contacted all of these people and settled it down in private.
I mean, it's not their fault for enabling automatic photo uploads [sp]It is their fault to not managing the brute force attack[/sp]
It wasn't really a brute force attack, more like phishing. Also a two-factor autentication for new devices, via SMS, could be an easy solution, but I guess that is too hard for some people
Heck, some of the pictures were embedded on here, that means even Facepunch could be sued :v:
Wonder if garry will do a repeat of the Marions-Kochbuch incident if lawyers decide to come calling?
people dont understand a joke
Not really, we only use youtube because everyone else uses it. It's easily replaceable if it's gone, like twitch -> hitbox
That's like saying we only use Google because everyone else uses it. There's always bing!
Heck, some of the pictures were embedded on here, that means even Facepunch could be sued :v:
Wok would be the legal basis for that?
They should also sue Microsoft and Apple because their OS didn't auto blur their nude photos. They should also sue LCD screen manufactures because they don't have in-built hardware components that would do the same.
That's like saying we only use Google because everyone else uses it. There's always bing!
"Hey what's the answer for x?" "Just google it"
It wasn't really a brute force attack, more like phishing. Run that with a password generator
I think if that if the Celebs sued Apple (Which is what they should of done) they would have been seen as 'uncool', sueing a bunch of nerds at Google however won't effect their reputation at all.
but many of the photos are still on BlogSpot and YouTube, which are both owned by Google.
They're not suing Google for returning results of the pictures, they're suing because numerous takedown notices to Google-owned services including BlogSpot and YouTube were ignored.
These stupid fucks won't get anything.
I'll say it again Nobody bats an eyelash if its some Average Jane's nudes that get leaked, but since its A-list celebrities, off we go into a witch hunt. Suddenly theres someone making money off of them, but not the average people, no... And how about Kim's little sex tape btw? Get over yourselves.
Did anyone actually read the article? It says theyre suing google for the images being on youtube and blogspot, which are owned by google.
