F4 Tornado near where I live, one killed, around 95 injured
At least one person is reported dead and dozens injured after a tornado ripped through the suburbs of Venice.
People in the Italian towns of Dolo and Mira, outside of Venice, have filmed a tornado tearing through their homes and giant hailstones falling from the sky.
One terrifying video shows a family driving in a car, trying to avoid the tornado’s path as it changes course.
Injured count is now up to 95. My whole town was hit by one last year, but it wasn't as aggressive as this one.
A building from the 18th century has also been lost.
I don't want to sound ignorant, I've honestly never heard of a tornado outside of the US. Where else in the world do they happen to be common?

The US is the most frequent with an average of 1100 per year, Canada is second with ~100 per year, and the rest of the world combined has 100-200 per year.

So then I wonder if the american midwest is unique in local climate conditions or just unusually scaled (which I suppose makes it unique).

Unique in climate conditions, iirc. Tornado Alley has warm wind from Mexico coming up and cold wind from Canada coming down which leads to massive amounts of tornadoes. At least that's how it was explained to me.

Perfect conditions for tornadoes.

Oh dear
Jesus, that's the closest I've seen someone record near a tornado.
[sp]And I really wish people would stop recording vertically.[/sp]

I knew about the conditions, I guess it never crossed my mind it was an especially unique phenomenon.
We get quite a few twirly whirly windy funnels in the south of England but nothing anywhere near as bad as what I've seen from US videos.
They mostly just push over dead trees, flimsy fences and plastic patio furniture.

It's interesting living in what is essentially Tornado Alley's birth canal (pretty much a stone's throw from the western Texas border), I can tell you that much. It's strange because we're pretty much where most of the tornado-producing storms are formed, but they usually fuck off to Texas/Oklahoma/etc. before any tornadoes actually touch-down here, but we do get a few.
