• PS4 rumors arise from leaked dev kits, looks like it probably is doing crossfire graphics after all
A new version of the PlayStation 4 dev kit is currently being distributed to developers with the final version expected next year, according to a new report. Anonymous sources have reportedly told VG247 that new versions of the Orbis kit are winging their way to developers, replete with Blu-ray support and housed in the humble cases of normal PCs. This is apparently the second iteration of the dev kit; the first, which appeared earlier this year, was in essence just a graphics card, while this version is now a "modified PC". The report asserts that the next update will come in January, when it'll be close to final specifications, with the ultimate version landing with devs next summer. The shipping of the Orbis kit apparently follows a series of meetings held by Sony in the US this week, where the company explained what the machine was designed to do and how to get the most out of it. Interestingly, at these meetings it's been claimed that Sony didn't refer to the machine as "the PlayStation 4" at all, instead opting to use the "Orbis" title at all times. The dev kits are apparently based on the AMD’s A10 APU series and come with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, as well as the Blu-ray drive already mentioned and a 256GB hard drive as standard. This is to ensure that the console will be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D. The Orbis kits have both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, as well as HDMI out slots; so pretty much exactly what you'd expect to find on your current PlayStation 3. However, the big reported difference comes with the UI, which has been designed to be more fluid and allow extensive navigation anywhere on the system simply by pressing the PS button mid-game. This was demoed to the assembled masses by purchasing DLC from the PS Store without quitting the game. No details were leaked about the system's controller. IGN reached out to Sony for comment, but were told the company "doesn't comment on rumour and speculation." If you're looking for more info on the Orbis, we've dissected the reported components that make up the dev kit before, as well as what it could mean for Sony's prospects in the next generation of consoles.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/01/report-ps4-dev-kits-surface-details-inside remember the rumor that the PS4 would have an x86 CPU? Looks like it still will, since AMD's APU's are PC CPU and GPU hybrids, making a heterogeneous computing solution. The rumors also say it will have a discrete GPU to go along with the APU, and earlier rumors before this APU rumor said the system would use Crossfire graphics, which supports this latest rumor.
I'm really excited for this, Playstation has always been great.
Holy crap A console with up to date hardware This is gonna be great
Getting this after slim/price drop
Not to mention that console devs are usually pretty ingenious with what they've given. I can only wonder what Naughty Dog is gonna do with it.
I really hope sony doesn't fuck this up like the PS3 launch and the Vita launch. Literally no games worth playing at the start then gets better a few years later.
I love the sound of this, but I'm really scared of what the initial price point will be
Five hundred ninety nine US dollars
Holy crap A console with up to date hardware This is gonna be great
You also have to imagine a console can generally run its hardware much more efficently than a PC, due to there being no overhead from the OS and the game basically having full control over the hardware (which is why the PS3 can get by with just 256mb of ram) If you have a console release with the same-level of specs of modern day PC's, it'll basically have a shit ton of power behind it that'll likely surpass the level of fidelity/complexity you could achieve in a moderatly high end PC.
I love the sound of this, but I'm really scared of what the initial price point will be
they'd have to decide to include an SSD for it to get anywhere near PS3 levels of outrageous which uh, given the 256GB number, actually seems likely if this rumor is true.
I really hope sony doesn't fuck this up like the PS3 launch and the Vita launch. Literally no games worth playing at the start then gets better a few years later.
Pretty much betting on this so I doubt I'll be missing much the first few years
Holy crap A console with up to date hardware This is gonna be great
Until it gets out of date...
Those specs are mad. 8-16 gigs of RAM is stupid huge, but it could play to it's advantage, dropping loading times by using it as a massive on-the-fly cache/ramdisc. The Graphics, as well as the CPU look to be insanely powerful for a console. With a Hypervisor OS, this will easy destroy most PCs and every other console on the market. I really want to see what Sony can do with this one. Sure, I'll be forking out probably more than I did for my 1st gen PS3, but this sounds like it might be worth it.
Predicting PC/Console shitstorm. I still see the use of x86 in a console as lazy development.

oh wow i know dev kits are usually stronger than the console (i think) but ill probably get one of these for my dorm room
Now we wait for the price My original 60gb ps3 chose a really bad time to commit suicide
I really hope sony doesn't fuck this up like the PS3 launch and the Vita launch. Literally no games worth playing at the start then gets better a few years later.
The PS3 launched with Microsoft breathing down Sony's neck and Nintendo stealing the spotlight from everyone. They were in a bad place back then. This time Microsoft's still dicking around with Kinect in an attempt to imitate Nintendo and seems to have no interest in next-gen anything, and Nintendo's next-gen console has gotten a more normal amount of hype. A much more comfortable place to start, if you ask me.
Let's just hope the dreamcast 2 comes out of nowhere and kicks everyone's ass.
Now just waiting on Microsoft to stop trying to see how long the 360 can possibly live. First in, Last out.
Holy crap A console with up to date hardware This is gonna be great
Let's be honest here when this gen was coming out it was up to date as well.
Let's be honest here when this gen was coming out it was up to date as well.
I hear ya. The PC I bought a month ago sounds very similar to these specs, and I didn't buy anything ultra powerful. Sony needs to go bigger.
Let's just hope the dreamcast 2 comes out of nowhere and kicks everyone's ass.
Just like the first time right guys!
16 gigs of RAM? Shit, looking forward to that.
I hear ya. The PC I bought a month ago sounds very similar to these specs, and I didn't buy anything ultra powerful. After the launch of the next generation of consoles, it'll be a level playing field once more - but give it a few years and the advantage will slip back to PC. It's just been more extremely in the favor of PC this time round because of Microsoft/Sony trying to drag out the life of the current gen as much as possible.
Hopefully this helps AMD.
16 gigs of RAM? Shit, looking forward to that.
Dev Kits are usually more powerful than the actual console. The PS4 will probably only have four to eight gigs of RAM.
8-16gb of ram? Yeah right no way. I HIGHLY doubt the PS4 will have close to that. Maybe 4.
8-16gb of ram? Yeah right no way. I HIGHLY doubt the PS4 will have close to that. Maybe 4.
I doubt they would go lower than 4GB. RAM is pretty cheap nowadays, it wouldn't make much sense to put in less than 4GB. I'd bet the PS4 will have 8GB.
I hope PS4 is a bit more developer-friendly than PS3.
