Australia's Department of Defence has challenged international scientists to build robots to replace soldiers in urban combat zones. Defence Minister Greg Combet today said research grants totalling $US1.6 million were on the table for anyone who could build fully autonomous ground robots capable of carrying out military operations in the field. The robots, in the form of vehicles, would need to coordinate and execute a mission, including detecting, monitoring and neutralising potential threats. The cash is being offered by the Australia's Defence Science and Technology Organisation in partnership with the US Department of Defense. Mr Combet said the Multi-Autonomous Ground-robotic International Challenge (MAGIC) aimed to fill a "technology gap" for coalition soldiers in the field, who already had access to some remote-controlled robots. "While remote-controlled robots are being deployed in operational areas, we need smart, intelligent and fully autonomous systems that can take over from humans in conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions," he said. "The ultimate aim is to make these operations much safer for our military personnel, leaving the robots to carry out the dirty and dangerous work." An international panel of judges would shortlist five finalists, to receive $US100,000 each. Further grants of up to $US750,000 would be available to finalists who could produce a working prototype by next year. Mr Combet said assistance would also be provided to develop the robots to become fully operational and available for use by the Australian Defence Force. Shortlisted entries will be presented at the Land Warfare Conference in November next year. Robots! :buddy:
Imagine that I made some movie reference.
Oh we're fucked
United States already has crappy prototypes/experimentals :q:
Not happening anytime soon, AI is just too crappy now. When they start developing emotions, and begin to learn things, then we're fucked.
If they get a lot of scientists creating different robots, they should make them all battle to choose the winner.
That really isn't a huge grant for what they are asking. and I would know. I've spent a good deal of time at a lab trying to do just that. Its fucking hard as shit.
Woo Australia!
Japan wins by default, they built a fucking GUNDAM. Nonfunctional, of course, but by god if anyone can do it it'd be Japan.
This is going to fail hard.
oh good. this'll be fun to watch backfire.
Not happening anytime soon, AI is just too crappy now. When they start developing emotions, and begin to learn things, then we're fucked.
Don't implement it then.
Don't implement it then.
Oh, someone will, and when they do......we'll probably kill that robot and never implement it again.
1.6 million! Oh my god!

1.6 million? That's nothing.
1.6 million? That's nothing.
It's plenty if you're smart enough to manage it.
It'd cost over 1.6 mil just to make the machine, probably.
Robots are a great idea but all technology has bugs, and we can't have a robot like the one in robocop going around killing civilians [editline]11:45PM[/editline] Then again people do that [editline]11:45PM[/editline] For fun
It'd cost over 1.6 mil just to make the machine, probably.
If you're building it out of solid gold.
Don't implement it then. [editline]07:13AM[/editline] They built a statue.
hence why he just said "non-funtional"
Let's hope they don't have AI, or else MATRIX.
The robots aren't going to be humanoids. They will be in the form of rovers and what not.
The robots aren't going to be humanoids. They will be in the form of rovers and what not.
There is no limit on what kind of form the bot can take, so there's really no way you can state that, it's like predicting the future.
Not happening anytime soon, AI is just too crappy now. When they start developing emotions, and begin to learn things, then we're fucked.
We could always get Valve to develop the AI... They did a great job with the Director, didn't they?
We could always get Valve to develop the AI... They did a great job with the Director, didn't they?
Pretty much event based scripting iirc.
BRBBuildingVault101. Seriously though, chances are this will backfire upon completion, maybe not instantly but in a few years.
