The first “flying car” of the 21st century is ready for the road.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has granted a three-year hardship exemption that will allow the Terrafugia Transition to be driven on public roads, according to its designers.
The Transition, which the company often describes as a “roadable aircraft” rather than a flying car, is a two-seat prop plane that can be transformed into a wheeled vehicle capable of being driven at highway speeds.
The unique craft was designed with road use in mind, and incorporates a number of automotive safety features, such as crumple zones and airbags.
However, the main hurdles to DOT approval were the use of motorcycle tires that aren’t approved for multi-purpose vehicles and a polycarbonate windshield, both of which the company says needed to keep the weight of the 970-pound Transition as low as possible for efficient flight.
The Transition, which has completed several successful test flights, is expected to enter production in late 2012.
The.Fuck.
I cannot imagine seeing that on a road..
It's a car that turns into an airplane like the mark 5 from speed racer not a hovercar.
There was a similar thing done before. James May used one in a show he did about gadgets. There's a reason why you've probably never heard about it before, and that's because it sucked. This thing will surely suffer the same fate (since from what I gather it's the exact same concept).
Fucking awesome.
I've always wondered how they're going to work out who can drive this sort of stuff.
The government would probably have to develop a new license type or something.

You clearly didn't read it. It's not a cool hover car that's been plastered over sci-fi since forever. It's a regular damn propeller plane that can be converted into an insanely impractical road vehicle.

Well, it flies, so you wouldn't see it on the road

Yeah.
Things like these usually end up in the shitter.
No, just no.
If it doesn't have VTOL it's not a flying car.
Heh, roll. Flying cars. Heh.
Also... Fox News? What are you doing reading Fox News?!
My flying car is already approved

Who's idea was this?

I know. It just seems - different to me for some reason.

Fox does actual reporting every now and again.
Can we see a source other then Fox news.
It'd be nice to have more than one source [sp]That doesn't include fox news[/sp]
Oh god the picture. It looks so... I can't explain. I don't like it. That's for sure.
All cars can fly, you just need to be going fast enough and hitting an angle.
It looks dumb.

I see that it can also be used as a cruise missile.
I remember seeing this project on the net a while back and was wondering how long before they'd be in production and flying.
Gonna be cool if it sets a trend to aim for this kind of market, because all you need is a big company to make some hell compact but stable design and you'll be set for flying cars.

I can't imagine seeing one of those on the road.
Sorry to be this guy but what is the advantage of a flying car? That just sounds dangerous.
Why do conceptual cars always look remarkably impractical?
There was a Popular Science article on this about a year ago.
Looked pointless. The designers basically said it was supposed to be 'the Porsche' for enthusiast pilots who don't want to rent a hanger.
It's not a flying car until I can be stuck in traffic, say 'fuck this', press a button, and away I go into the air.

Aww, I was hoping for something similar to this:

Its not a flying car unless I can say fuck it and fly away from a traffic jam.
This is just some kind of micro plane.
Imagine the cost of a fender bender...
I can't imagine this going so well with minor car accidents.
A plane that turns into a car or a plane that drives around like a car, is not a flying car. It's more like a multipurpose plane.
