• What is better, Windows 7 or 8?

So i am planning to get a new computer, but i can't decide what is better, Windows 7 or 8? Also, isn't there some bad stuff about Windows 8?
I guess you should try both. Some will say 7 is better, others will say 8 is better. I switched back from 8 to 7 because i didn't like the Metro interface (although that changed), and because it is more compatible with general programs and games, also, the lack of DX6 support (making most games run in 30fps) is a killer for me, since i like old games.
Well, I'm fine with windows 8.1. It takes ages to install, but that's mostly the only non common windows problem.
Windows 8 is pretty nice because it boots super fast and runs a little faster. It all depends on your preference though.
Windows 7 on desktop.
I prefer Windows 8 on desktop and laptop, but not Windows 8.1. 8 Feels less intrusive to me and starts up super fast and stuff. If you like the UI get 8, you won't regret it.

For example what was the point of adding the start button back to just open the start menu? And the start menu search is REALLY slower compared to 8 even when i turn bing search off.

But I kinda like the options to avoid the metro screen since I don't need it. And the search works pretty fine if everything is well set.
Get Windows 8. If they're equally priced for you, get Windows 8. The only "bad stuff" Windows 8 has is extra bits that comes down to preference. Basically everything you can do in 7, you can do in 8.
I prefer 7. By a mile.
If you're getting an OS for a new computer get 8, there's not really a reason to get 7 anymore. I love 7 but 8 is just a better OS, it's Windows 7 but way faster and it has a much better task manager.
Let's see....Windows 8 has -Built-in ISO mounting support -The file transfer dialog can pause and with multiple transfers going on at one time, it groups them into one window. -Has it's own OSD volume indicator (FINALLY) -Built in, unobtrusive Windows defender (Aka Security Essentials) -Has nice email client which gives you notifications etc -Has a nice and easy camera app so you can take quick videos/pictures with your webcam if you care about that. -Other small tweaks including much improved task manager -Better multi-monitor support
-Built in, unobtrusive Windows defender (Aka Security Essentials)
For god sake, strike this one. You don't want to see the tests of this (anti)virus system. But I totall agree with the other ones (except the camera app, I don't need apps on windows).
For god sake, strike this one. You don't want to see the tests of this (anti)virus system.
Yeah, but it's at least better than nothing.
except the camera app, I don't need apps on windows
I actually found that it's hard to find a good and simple webcam application, so it's nice to have one already in W8 should you need it.
Yeah, but it's at least better than nothing. I actually found that it's hard to find a good and simple webcam application, so it's nice to have one already in W8 should you need it.
Actually it's not since you trust your AV which makes you kinda careless. So you just click and download everything while you keep in mind "my AV will warn me". Rather no AV in this case. The brain.exe is the best AV you can have anyway. But just in case AVG is checking potential dangerous files for me. I don't need it, but you never know. Edit: For all those who disagree, I would like to see why you think that's not true/stupid. Gimme some reasons/examples.
Windows 8 is faster, but apparently 8.1 has buttfucked a lot of users
apparently 8.1 has buttfucked a lot of users
How?
Just general issues, maybe not a lot of users, but some. I've just seen a lot of people complain in tech support, of course Microsoft might have even patched those issues by now
Just general issues, maybe not a lot of users, but some. And the only general issue I know is about windows 8. The issue were callef 'Metro screen'. Never had a problem with this, but also no use. Still, many people were flaming because of this.
Yeah I just skip past the metro, can still access control panel and things by right clicking the "start button"
Yeah I just skip past the metro, can still access control panel and things by right clicking the "start button"
I don't even have to see it. Win 8.1 got an option to boot to the desktop.
Install Classic Shell or Start8 if you want the start menu back.
Well, I'm fine with windows 8.1. It takes ages to install, but that's mostly the only non common windows problem.
Lol takes me like 5 minutes to install windows 8.1 to my ssd using my usb 3 drive.
Install Classic Shell or Start8 if you want the start menu back.
If you're going to pay for a start menu use StartIsBack, it behaves almost exactly like 7's.
If you're going to pay for a start menu use StartIsBack, it behaves almost exactly like 7's.
Or dont be a wuss and use the modern ui startmenu as it is better than the old startmenu.
Personally, I really like some imporvements made in Windows 8/8.1 that makes it really hard for me to go back to Windows 7. 1. Native ISO Support is so convenient, since I don't have to use some kind of crappy freeware ISO mount tool to do the job. 2. The speed improvements are really nice. 3. The task manager is a huge improvement over the last one. 4. MSE preinstalled is a really nice thing 5. Touch Screen support has really improved in Windows 8, and since I have a Touchscreen laptop, it's really hard to go back. 6. Uses so much less resources than Windows 7 and is more efficient. 7. The automatic installation of most drivers is really useful. As said before, you can remove the Metro interface and use Classic shell if it bothers you so much. Personally after using Windows 8 for a while, it's really convenient, and with 8.1 you can boot to desktop by default. Also the addition of Secureboot and Data Execution Prevention makes Windows 8 much more secure.
The automatic installation of most drivers is really useful.
When I got an SSD and upgraded to Windows 8 on my desktop computer, I didn't have to install a single driver.
Lol takes me like 5 minutes to install windows 8.1 to my ssd using my usb 3 drive.
That's the point, SSD. I have a HDD with 7200rpm. Your SSD is probably >10 times faster. But it's not like I'm reinstalling my windows every week. So I have no problem with this.
