• Rhode Island Air Show (2011) - Blue Angels and Other Cool Shit

Every year, the state of Rhode Island (Obviously in the USA) hosts a massive airshow where everything from jets to helicopters do stunts for massive crowds. I've personally have never been to an airshow, but I decided to visit one just for shits and giggles. It was free, after all. As soon as I arrived there, the place was PACKED. It eventually sold out and people wanting to attend were kicked out from the parking lot entrance. It took about five hours for the Blue Angels to do their thing, but the whole wait wasn't too bad. It began with the typical propeller airplanes doing barrel rolls and flips. I was pretty amazed how it wasn't necessarily smooth but rather sharp turns. They would just snap to whatever formation or angle they wanted to rather quickly. Then came some red and white planes (Snow Birds) which made some massive formations and lettering/shapes in the sky with smoke. Afterwards were the helicopters which made flips and barrel rolls as well (Yes, they were actually helicopters) for about twenty minutes. By now, I decided to go walking around as there were hundreds and hundreds of different tents for different things such as souvenirs and even an arcade tent. Bought a few pins and shirts and set out to see the parked C130 Hercules as well as the parked Blue Angel jets. Not much had occurred other than them starting the propellers for the two C130s, so I returned to the middle of the airfield. Apparently a pickup truck had a jet engine and was zooming across the landing strip, to which I suddenly heard loud explosions. Turns out it was just: (Photo not mine) According to Wikipedia, "The United States Navy's Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, popularly known as the Blue Angels, was formed in 1946 and is currently the oldest formal flying aerobatic team. The squadron's six demonstration pilots currently fly the F/A-18 Hornet in more than 70 shows at 34 locations throughout the United States each year, where they still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in their aerial displays in 1946. Since their inception, the "Blues" have flown a variety of different aircraft types for more than 427 million spectators worldwide." According to Wikipedia as well, the job has a 10% fatality rate, with exactly 26 pilots killed. More planes had arrived and did their things, but the main event arrived at about 3:30. The Blue Angels zoomed overhead, thus causing the ground to rumble like an earthquake. I managed to only catch a few glimpses of their formations and flybys. Please pardon the horrible quality of my camera and the lack of cool footage. As such, I've supplied with photos from http://www.turnto10.com/. Although the charred food was shit, the stunts and the MOTHERFUCKING EXPLOSIONS from the A-10 Warthog were amazing. If any Facepunchers live in RI, go to the airshow next year. Any non-Rhodies, find a damn airshow to go to. Have any airshow-related experiences, Facepunch?
I remember wanting to go to air shows. I was a huge fan of that sort of thing
God damn that looks awesome. Jet trucks, giant airplanes. What's not to like?
I've been to one, but it was nothing special. There wasn't even any pyrotechnics. Fuck you Finland for being ass boring.
I go to the oshkosh Wisconsin air show every year, it's pretty cool. The jet cars are kinda boring to watch, but some of the plane/helicopter tricks are boss.

The jets were SO LOUD. I eventually developed some sort of temporary paranoia when I saw seagulls swooping down low in front of me. :tinfoil:
i went to an air show once. I was eating funnel cake when a jet flew right over us with that stealth crap they pull. You know, where they fly out of sight and then like a minute later they fly right over so it's suddenly loud? Stupid chick sitting in front of me jumped and sent my funnel cake into the depths. :(

They'd pass over you and the roaring would arrive two seconds later.
I have been to his and got the melted light from the back of the truck!
airshows rock especially when you live right next to the airforces relatively biggest base (lackland) i wake up to f16s training almost erry day
airshows rock especially when you live right next to the airforces relatively biggest base (lackland) i wake up to f16s training almost erry day
Still beats my annoying alarm clock.
Go to Wendover and Reno for airshows. Fucking P-51s are the most badass planes. [editline]26th June 2011[/editline]
Still beats my annoying alarm clock.
"Hey mom! What time is i"- YEEERROOOOW- THOOOOM
Fuck I had really nice pics of the Blue Angels and the F14/F15 (don't remember) when they came to the Bay before I reinstalled Windows 7 :saddowns: [editline]27th June 2011[/editline] Also how could you forget Fat Albert?
Still beats my annoying alarm clock.
jet engine makes me hard
One of the advantages in living in an Air-Force town. Flybys allday erryday
One of the advantages in living in an Air-Force town. Flybys allday erryday
What do you get to see? Also I would become a fighter pilot if I wasn't blind as a bat.
C-130s and A-10 Warthogs mostly My airsofting field is right next to the base so occasionally we get a really low C-130 fly overhead. :iia:
Explosions, why is it not surprising me? oh yes, America.
Explosions, why is it not surprising me? oh yes, America.
It is a show. Although at the three shows I've been to there weren't any explosions.
It is a show. Although at the three shows I've been to there weren't any explosions.
I agree with all the plane stunts and shit but, explosions? Really?
I was going to go to this, but NO. I got dragged to a fucking clam bake with people I don't even know. I hate clams. Fucking clams. We could hear the show from there for God's sake!
My grandparents used to live in Pensacola, FL, which is right next to a base where the Blue Angels train. Trips to Florida always meant watching them practice. :smug:
I admire the Blue Angels. I hope they would go for a world tour and fly in Malaysia and shit. So far the Red Arrows from the UK came here and their performances was rad. Did Fat Albert do the extreme STOL?
I want to see Team 60 someday.. :worship:
Wow, I'm sad. Yesterday before lunch, my dad told me about an air show in Rhode Island, and we could have gone but no one was ready in the morning to leave (We live in Massachusetts so it's about an hour drive to it). The night before the air show I stayed up until 2am watching Saturday Night Live and a couple Rambo movies. I wasn't able to go to the Westfield air show last summer because we were in New Hampshire, and I just missed this air show too. It sucks. Anyways, thank you so damn much OP for posting these, now I can see what I missed! [editline].[/editline] Guess I'll be going to this one and the Westfield air show next year.

The place packs up within thirty minutes, so it's the earliest birds who get the worm.
Wow I remember going to one of their shows as a kid. It was awesome, going to have to go to another one this summer.
I live about 30 minutes away, but no one wanted to go with me. :saddowns:
