I've found out recently that members of my family ( my sister, her boyfriend, and my brothers ) all do a fair share of illegal downloading. I try to keep them from doing this by logging and blocking all websites they visit. I found today that my sisters boyfriend (whom of which my family seems to think the sun shines out of his ass) Seems to use a lot of illegal mp3, and mobile phone application websites. (freeloading games you would normally pay for!)
Because the Digital Economy Act will be going into effect in a few days. I'm worried, and scared for myself and my mother (since we both pay the internet bill, and hence we'd both be charged if anybody get's caught!!!)
Is there some sort of program I can install on all the computers within my house to prevent them from visiting these sites?
Some sort of pre-defined child safety filter.
EDIT: I'm hoping for something free at least for now ( being that I don't get paid for another week ) else anything under £30 would suit me.
i don't know of any blocking software, but if you're worried about them getting caught then just get peerblock
don't worry about it?

everybody torrents
my family does, unwittingly. (limewire for them)
ADblock Plus for Firefox, blocks most ads and does add some protection
Block the ports.

Thanks I'll give it a try tomorrow and post back how well it suits me requirements.

Ok just leave, you're clearly breaking rules. Firstly you're admitting your family ( likely including yourself ) use illegal torrents ( don't try and cover it by saying you only get legal torrents, else you wouldn't of posted it in a thread asking how to block illegal downloads!) and you're also trying to encourage me to allow illegal torrents within my household by saying that I shouldn't worry about it.
Talk to them about it first, and tell them why you are doing it.

Yeah you probably shouldn't just randomly block their sites. That's like treating them like a little kid and also a pretty dick move.

Thank you for informing us of your use of warez.

OP, you could try editing the hosts file. That effectively blocks all access to sites on that list. Antispyware programs frequently edit this file to keep the user from accessing known harmful sites.
edit the hosts file and redirect all those illegal sites to meatspin
edit the hosts file and redirect all those illegal sites to meatspin
 I'm pretty sure that would prevent him from ever pirating anything ever again.
OP I don't agree with what you are doing, but you can use OpenDNS and set the filter to a custom filter. Most likely they won't know how to change the DNS server and won't know thats what is blocking it. You can also just edit the settings of their p2p program so that it downloads at like a byte per second.

Maybe so, but considering I pay half of the internet bill, I think I have right to secure my ass from prison.
And thanks for the OpenDNS suggestion, trying now.

people dont want to pay for shit that isnt worth paying for, get over it.

As a punishment you could chop off the internet to their computers so they don't have any at all.
oh shit the cops have probably already been alerted
you should move out of the country, they've already started choosing targets for raids.
i hear they get 2 teams to bust into your house, one rappels through your window, and the other blows open the door
apparently they are allowed to use lethal force, so if you don't want to get a faceful of 9mm you should get your family and RUN
they can't do anything to you if you're not in the country, so go get plane tickets NOW
What
Remove your internet.
The other option that you have but would be more work would be to edit the hosts file in order to make them inacessable. However, you would need to keep editing as they find more and more sites.

Look out! Charlie Manson just killed another two people in your city, run! Secure your ass from prison!
Just because you own the internet connection doesn't mean you go to jail. Say a car is stolen, and its used for a drive by. The guy who got his car stolen isn't guilty of killing people from that drive by.
And hah. You're cute, Mr. Abiding Citizen
You worry too much.
What
it's a way of saying 'don't worry'
it's a way of saying 'don't worry'
Ah. I see.
You seem like an ass for blocking all the sites that they use.
Is the Digital Electronics act consist in Canada?
[editline]06:15PM[/editline]
Does the Digital Economy Act Is in Canada?
Film them having sex then find what the most common torrent site he uses is and see if you can have an add placed on it with them banging it off.
[editline]10:48PM[/editline]
and is the DEA on in england?
You're not going to get jailed, nothing is going to happen
IF they even catch you, the most you'll get is a fine, you would need to do something on the scale of hosting The Pirate Bay to get jailtime.
But if you don't want people downloading on your connection, just tell them not to.

Just use peerguardian.
(Although if you have 64bit you're gonna need to install Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider)
