I don't really know much about quantum physics but I just watched a documentary on it and I really want to learn more about it.
I have taken a few upper college level physics classes but all of them were materialistic in nature. Just thought that there'd probably be a few people on Facepunch who knew a good place to start learning. Right now I'm just planning on Wikipedia but I'd prefer something a bit more visual (a movie would be good too). I'm just looking for whatever is the best place for Quantum Physics.
Honestly, try this out -

I read it earlier this year. helpful diagrams.

thanks for pointing out exactly why that was a stupid post
The first thing you need to know is that anything Homeopathy, telepathists, psychics, creationists, Zionists, magnet therapists, chiropractors, astrologers, and those guys who make perpetual motion machines say about it is wrong.
Also, 366 geometry-believers, dowsers, cryptozoologists, UFO believers, Psychokinesists, Pyrokineststs, Phrenologists, Crystal healers, Dianeticists, Young-earthers, and earth expansionists
Fuck, nearly every crank scientist resorts to the quantum energy of the human cell
waving around your high school gpa dick doesn't mean you took any classes that challenged you
My school didn't offer any challenges. We were terribly under-funded, and almost shut down twice. I guess I'll just wave around my summer school record though and pretend I'm you

This is movie is the epitome of everything said above. It is the most idiotic piece of New Age cult propaganda about Quantum Physics I have ever seen.

then ask your parents for a better education
then ask your parents for a better education
You're only a few years too late, mate.
then ask your parents for a better education
No offense or anything. But any bodies parents are at least 20 years behind on any education. I was smarter than my father in the 6th grade. And I learned how to use a computer before he did, and he bought us a custom built one!
Parents know a lot from the 80s or 70s. Not 2011.
[editline]4th July 2011[/editline]
Damn ninjas!
Neither of my parents took basic Algebra or any science involving atomic structure or any laws of physics. I'm trying to add intelligence to my family tree. Maybe my degree in computer science will help..
then ask your parents for a better education
"Mum, my school is shit. Can I go to a better one?"
"No, we're not in the catchment area for any better schools."
"Can we move somewhere where there are better schools?"
"No, we've got debts up to our necks. We're probably here for the next 10 years at least."
"Fuck"
True story
Same, with a few synonyms here and there :sigh:
First of all you need to know the mathematical principles. Analysis I + II & Functional Analysis may help. Here you will learn basics of Series and their limies, complex Integrals and especially differential equations and Fourier transformations. Once you all got those basics, you are nearly ready to go for Schrödinger's Formalism (Wave-Machnic). Once you got this right, you should also know about Linear Algebra I to work with Heisenbergs Matrices-Mechanic (both - Schrödingers and Heisenbergs - Formalism are homeomorph so are equivalent for describing QM. But both have advantages and disadvantages in certain situations).
When you all got this, solve potentials like box-potentials and transforming a spatial Wavefunction to a momentum one. Once you those basics right, you are ready for more complex potentials like the harmonic oscillators and it's operators. At final, you can go for the hydrogen atom and maybe to the extended hydrogen-atom model with spin-orbit coupling, hyperfine splitting etc (which will require perturbation theory).
Just a little note: I studied 2 years of normal classical physics and the math for it before I've got my first contact with QM. The reason is, you can apply a lot of tricks you learned there later. Now I'm in year 5 and in the experimental quantum-optics sector (manipulating cold-atoms with light or vice-versa).
Good luck.
Problem with Operators is that you'd need funftionals as well as spectral theory and abstract operators to fully understand .
The fourier transformation for example is only defined for intergration over all complex numbers :(
I'm sitting at defining H (hilbert room) for infinite dimensions righr now and it's damm hard

No. I, like a lot of people on Facepunch, have learned far more off the internet then I ever did in a class. Classes are either too slowpaced or they're too fast over topics I would like to learn more about. I like to control the pace as well as the depth of the way I learn. Thank you internet. What did people like us ever do before?

The documentary I watched was very much so about the philosophical side of it. I thought it was quite strange and I didn't really like it which is why I want to know what quantum physics is REALLY about and what's really going on at a research level etc.

Any movie that posts a review of it as "A sleeper hit" on the front cover is a joke to begin with...for fucks sake.
