This is a thread dedicated to bizarre, home-made, custom, unique, or otherwise zany musical instruments! The Zendrum Designed in the 90s, the Zendrum was created to give drummers the same stage presence and freedom of movement as a guitarist. A fully functional midi controller, the Zendrum has become a favorite for musicians who wish to stand out. It's most noticeably used by side show performances in Disney's Animal Kingdom and EPCoT, as well as Universal's Islands of Adventure. Though it was designed for drummers, being a midi controller means it can control any sound. The Kitara puts the sounds of synthesizers in the hands of guitarists. It features a full polyphonic neck with keys for each note playable on a guitar, similar to the Starr Labs "Ztar" instruments made famous by Pendulum's Rob Swire. It differs in its control scheme: a multi-touch screen similar to one of Korg's Kaoss devices, and an on-board, open-source synth engine powered by Linux. I'd love one of these. Norwegian folk viol called a hardingfele. It's tuned to an open chord with drone strings, it's like a violin/hurdy gurdy hybrid. Sounds amazing

Is the Theremin too mainstream? Looking for a synth that's unique, yet timeless? The Ondes Martenot.

The ondes Martenot, also known as the ondium Martenot, Martenot and ondes musicales, is an early electronic musical instrument invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot. The instrument's eerie wavering notes are produced by varying the frequency of oscillation in vacuum tubes. The production of the instrument stopped in 1988, but several conservatories in France still teach it. In 1997, the Ondéa project began designing an instrument based on the ondes Martenot. Since the Martenot name is still protected, the new instrument is called Ondéa, but has the playing and operational characteristics of the original ondes Martenot. In 2001, a completed prototype was first used in concerts. These instruments have been in regular use since 2005. Since 2008, Jean-Loup Dierstein, with the support of Maurice Martenot's son, has been developing a new, officially called ondes Martenot instrument based on the model used when production stopped in 1988. The ondes Martenot has been used by many composers, most notably Olivier Messiaen. He first used it in the Fête des Belles Eaux for six ondes, written for the 1937 International World's Fair in Paris[6] and then used it in several of his works, including the Turangalîla-Symphonie.
It uses several unique methods of control, demonstrated here: The ondes Martenot also has unique speakers, including one that has 8 resonating strings attached across the sound box. Two examples of performance: Turangalîla-Symphonie, 5th Mvt. by Olivier Messiaen Formule (a section of) by Thomas Bloch Some other strange instruments I can think of are the Korg Kaossilator (I have it and it's awesome), and this entire website: http://www.oddmusic.com/gallery/
