Paramedics were called to Peter Jackson’s New Zealand studio Tuesday morning following an explosion that injured two men working on the director’s $500 million Hobbit production.
According to the film’s publicist Ceris Price, the men were drilling a statue when the accident occurred. Both production members suffered minor burns and were treated on the scene before being rushed to the hospital as a precaution. “One of them had some burnt nostril hairs,” explained Price. “Apparently if that’s the case, there is always the risk of inhalation so they get checked out.”
The explosion occurred in a workshop — not on set, and thus did not affect production on the 3-D precursor to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The first installment of Jackson’s Hobbit two-parter — starring Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Ken Stott, Stephen Fry and Martin Freeman — is still scheduled for a December 2012 release.
$500 million? I expected it to be high-budget, but wow. Can't wait to see it.
Checked it, and it appears to be the highest budget movie yet. (To show how expensive it is, the budget for the LOTR trilogy was around $260 million.)
It would seem that the movie is cursed.
Honestly I expected some kind of tiny explosion that had injured two dwarf crew members.

I hear it's the ring...

That smell would be nasty.
$500 million, it better be good.
How much was Avatar's production costs?
So now they need to make $500 million just to break even.

That's going to be really hard too to I think
How much was Avatar's production costs?
~$237 million according to Wikipedia.
~$237 million according to Wikipedia.
Makes me wonder what Jackson will accomplish with twice the budget and a greater reliance over traditional effects.
Uh I think that $500 million is the combined total for the two films he's making. I find it hard to believe one film could cost that much. As far as breaking a record, I think Spiderman 3 still holds it, for costing something like $300 million.

Plus all the cost of advertising, which can run you up another $100 million. But even if it was just the first part costing that, this movie could do it, especially when you factor in the worldwide total it's going to make, which will probably be something like $900 million to over $1 billion (for just one of these)

You say that as if you have doubt that it won't. Each subsequent movie has grossed $100 million more than its predecessor. Return of the King grossed $1.1 billion. This movie will easily surpass that mark.
But why must Spider-Man 3 be so disappointing?

Character overload. Leads to a flimsy plot and uninspiring conflicts.
It was the goblins.
3D? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
But knowing Peter, he won't let us down :unsmith:

Remember, real 3D, not the converted crap.
And it will be released in 2D as well.
Oh my god, I had no idea Stephen Fry were going to be in the movie.

It was the lack of Venom
It was only announced recently. He's playing the Master of Laketown.
I hope PJ does another one of those production video diaries soon
I can't wait to see this.
This is quiet an old picture
