I just rented The Spirit on blu-ray (as this was the most visually interesting movie I could think of at the time) to see what it would look like on my HD television. What I am wondering is both of these two things. First is it cost effective to buy blu-rays that I may already own on DVD? Is there that much of a difference in the definition of movies made 40 or 50 years ago? I know I sound terribly misinformed, but I have tried to figure these things out on my own and I just haven't come to a definite conclusion.
What I also want to know is what movies are worth owning on blu-ray? This is the real reason why I made this thread. I was thinking of buying some Pixar movies and that is all I know.
Well it all depends. There is much better sound and video quality, ome extra space for DVD commentary and all that but that's about it really. I have recently purchased a blu-ray player with movies such as Training Day, A Knight's Tale, Iron Man, Aliens vs Predator, Kingdom of Heaven and the TV-show Generation Kill.
I'd get one if I were you.
Standard television isn't much bigger than your phone's screen, it's just magnified on larger TVs, thus losing quality (blurring etc). Blu-Ray movies are size of your computers screen (or bigger), so they look better on the same TV, as they aren't zoomed in.
And about buying the same movie twice - I don't think so, but if you really value higher quality, no one is going to stop you
Yes yes and yes.

And also, to check whether there's a quality improvement over the DVD in an old film, check screenshots on www.blu-ray.com
first question - (a)Depends on the quality of the Blu-Ray transfer, (b)what features the Blu-Ray has, (c)and how much you like the movie.
(a)Sometimes a Blu-Ray will look better on DVD, or at least an upscaled DVD will look better than the Blu-Ray version, this happens when they add a lot of ridiculous edge enhancement and noise reduction, which ironically make edges smudged and kills color, thus adding noise (just a different kind).
(b)Sometimes they add a shit ton of features to Blu-Ray versions, sometimes there aren't any (and i can't think of any reason aside for a lazy studio)
(c)Obviously don't go replacing your ENTIRE library, just replace the movies you love and the ones you watch often. (and again if they don't have terrible picture quality, which only happens of the studio is too lazy)
second question - depends on the condition of the film (by film i literally mean film) how well they stored it, how clean it is, and how much time and effort goes into the scan. Generally an old film should look great on Blu-Ray, as it should have the look of showing the actual film rather than merely a digital version of it as you would get out of an upscaled DVD. Sometimes they're able to pull a surprising amount of detail out of old films. Either way, usually the only old films on Blu-Rays are excellent movies, and because of their following/fanbase/whatever, the studios took time and effort into their Blu-Ray, and they look quite good. It's like actually seeing the film projected at a cinema, almost.
third question(s?) - Iron Man, Sin City, Saving Pvt. Ryan, all-things-Pixar, The Dark Knight, Watchmen (of course, if you liked it), Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Band of Brothers, Disney Classics (Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White, as of yet - their Blu-Rays are fucking mind blowing)
The Dark Knight looks FANTASTIC on Blu Ray.
Do you have to use HDMI for blu-ray on a PC? Would I still be able to watch blu-ray to a decent standard on my VGA monitor?

No and depends on the resolution of your monitor.

You decide. Is it worth $20 extra per disk? My answer is if you've got a +40" TV then it's awesome.
Movies worth owning are ones such as Pearl Harbor, Lord of the rings, basically any movie that involves great battles. I wouldn't get cartoons in bluray, as it's hardly worth it unless you're a huge fan of the show.
No and depends on the resolution of your monitor.
Well its 1600 x 900 so it will support the 720 HD res I guess
Well its 1600 x 900 so it will support the 720 HD res I guess
Is it 22" or larger? Otherwise you have to be pretty close (1.½ meter and closer) to notice a real differense.
20 dollars extra per disc? what the fuck?
Well its 1600 x 900 so it will support the 720 HD res I guess
no you can just watch it at 1600x900 it doesn't matter
[editline]05:27PM[/editline]
i watch a lot of blu-rays at 1400x1050 and it's still great obviously
Is it 22" or larger? Otherwise you have to be pretty close (1.½ meter and closer) to notice a real differense.
20" , I sit about 1foot away from my screens. I might grab a drive if they are on sale soon and give it a go.
You decide. Is it worth $20 extra per disk? My answer is if you've got a +40" TV then it's awesome.
$20 extra? you mean for rebuying movies, right? because if you seriously buy your blu-rays anywhere aside for amazon or bestbuy on sale, you don't know how to properly purchase blu-rays. you should be spending like $22 tops on a brand new blu-ray.
Movies worth owning are ones such as Pearl Harbor, Lord of the rings, basically any movie that involves great battles. I wouldn't get cartoons in bluray, as it's hardly worth it unless you're a huge fan of the show.
first: Pearl Harbor is a terrible movie
second: Lord of the Rings was a really shitty transfer and thus a really shitty blu-ray, effectively a waste of money if you already own the movies on DVD
third: "battles" can't seriously be the only thing you think about when buying a movie
last: hate to burst your butt hole but the ONE category that looks the MOST amazing on blu-ray is animation. and there are a LOT of truly great, wonderful, and amazing animated films. (note then again this probably has to do with your recommendation of "Pearl Harbor" and "great battles" thing - you're theatrically challenged)

actually if i'm correct on a PC it will just downscale 1080p. which will look better than that(720p).

When buying a movie for it's picture quality, I honestly don't care about the storyline. Yes pearl harbor is a horrible movie, but chapter 21-31 is always a killer.
Lotr wasn't a horrible port, and if you're a fan of the lotr series then it's worth rebuying in my opinion.
With battles, refer to #1. If you're only buying a movie for it's picture quality, you want high-def fire and epic battle scenes.
Animation doesn't need to be in bluray. Sure it looks great, but unless you're a large fan of that paticulary cartoon then I don't think it's worth paying extra for.
And yes, a PC will downscale 1080p, but there won't be much of a differense bethween downscaled 1080p and 720p
Edit:
And yes, I pay $20 extra for a BD-DVD, as that's what it costs here in scandinavia. Unless you're buying DVD's from the cheapo "Films on sale" selection of old and unwanted films, then bluray costs that much extra.
Yes yes and yes.

These are excellent film ideas. I'm glad you mentioned the Disney Classics because it hadn't crossed my mind. Thank you for all the information as well.

all blu-rays are in 1080p, that's what blu-rays are (although some dodgy ones are in 1080i which are akin to the HDTV copies

Someone owns a movie, that most obviously mean he's yet another twilight-douche who runs around and barks at the moon.
I own it because I live with my mom and sister, and my sister and her friend wanted me to go and buy it.
sorry but you really are a disgrace to movie aficionados and not to mention don't know what you're talking about when it comes to blu-rays
What is there to talk about? All it is is some cheap out-takes and a slightly better picture quality, it's not like the entire movie story somehow changed just because you can see the dust in the background.
The movie is exactly the same, Transformers doesn't automatically start being about dogs just because it's on a different DVD format with a higher picture quality.

Oh fuck it, it's like talking to your dog.

Yeah I stopped reading his posts when he suggested Pearl Harbor. I have a pretty good idea of what kind of blu-rays I want to buy now so thanks for that. I also know which ones not to buy so thanks for that too.
so does being theatrically challenged come with being blind and bad at numbers/technology or something

That's not my opinion at all, nor did I say anything remotely like that. You're the one suggesting bad films just because they look nice. That's the attitude killing the movie industry that makes shit like Avatar get made.

i think i might need to make a blu-ray megathread who agrees
