Hello everyone currently i'm gaming on a dell studio laptop which is really starting to get annoying. I recently finished my summer job and now I have some money to build a computer. I dont really know the first thing about buying these parts and i would really appreciate your input. I would like to make my purchases from Newegg but anywhere that ships in the US with good prices would be fine. As for the computer it's going to primarily be a gaming PC as my laptop was initially bought for school work and heres what I am looking for:
1. A 2 TB harddrive steam library alone is atleast 1 TB.
2. atleast a 3 GHz processor brand does matter I might look into overclocking down the road but nothing at the moment.
3. I've been told that 4 GB of ram would be more than enough for gaming.
4. I would like for the video card to have an HDMI out because i'll probably have the PC connected to my HD tv in my dorm. I would like the card to be able to handle a 1920x1080 resolution and run games smoothly and also DVI out.
5. Theres no need for an OS/Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor I already have all that including a backup LCD monitor if the HD tv doesnt work out.
6. A wireless networking card Only way to reliably get internet in my dorm.
7. This isnt a requirement but it would be nice if the motherboard supported SLI or whatever it is that allows multiple video cards.
8. Also a DVD drive for obvious reasons.
9. even though the budget is $1,000 i'd still like to save as much as possible.
I'm pretty sure thats about all the information you guys need if you need anything else just post and i'll answer it as soon as I can thanks in advance for the help.

Also forgot to mention I have an external Esata/USB harddrive so if the motherboard had some sort of output for the Esata that would be nice but I could easily fall back on the USB.
Just a note, don't get a 1TB HDD, get 2/3 1TB ones.
I'll come up with a full build for ya when I get home.
Alright but why would you recommend seperate harddrives?
2TB drives cost more and are less reliable.
Alright but why would you recommend seperate harddrives?
Fail safe/RAID.
If I set it up for RAID wouldn't I be losing harddrive space though? also is there a way I can make windows combine the seperate harddrives into a single volume? my Steam library is quite large 138 games and is very close to 1TB and I would like to keep my games installed.
You can combine 2 hard-drives with RAID0 (aka striped raid) which makes windows read them as a single volume.
Alternatively, there's RAID5 (striped & backup), which requires 3 hard drives.
so if I did RAID-0 with 2 1TB harddrives would it read as a single 1TB harddrive or as a single 2 TB harddrive.
Having 2 1TB hdd's in RAID0 Would give you 2TB of space, this is faster, but when one hdd fails, the entire 2TB volume would be inaccessible. If i am correct :S
Keep in mind if you format your drives to RAID 0, and it gets corrupted, you're done. (No back up) But the pros are that you get 1 single volume and possible increase in speed the drives operate at.
Eh doesn't sound like something I'd be willing to risk I think ill stick to seperate volumes
Anyone willing to suggest a build?
HAF 932 Advance
MSI P67-A GD-55
Intel i5-2500k
XFX Core Edition 850W Semi-Modular
MSI GTX560 Ti Twin Frozr III
Samsung Spinpoint 1TB (x3?)
4gb Corsair XMS3 1333mhz.
That's just off the top of my head, you might have to lower parts slightly for $1000.

Also RAID5 gives you the performance and space of RAID0 but without the risk.

That HAF advance is a little expensive would this case work instead? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233
yes that's the best low-mid budget case out there
or if you want something a little better between the two look at the 690 II advanced
Alright I believe i've decided on my final build.

Total Price is $965.92 and i'm gonna go with just 1 1TB harddrive for now. Will I need to order anything else? like more fans/cables or some thermal compound?
I feel like with $1000 you should be able to get a 570 in there
[editline]wef[/editline]
and you can
how about this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233 - DVD burner
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 - Spinpoint 1TB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145278 - Corsair 4GB 1333
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233 - HAF 912 (Alternatively, go for the 922, I feel like they're better value than the 690)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.689882 - 2500K + Gigabyte Z68
total is $960 including S&H
About the 912 though, if you're concerned about space, that case is surprisingly big - in my case, it fit a 570 without having to remove the cage and an A70 with ease
-snip-
Is there that much of a difference between the 570 and the 560?
Also just looked at the prices of the 570's and unless i'm going to notice a difference in performance I don't think i'm going to want to upgrade for the amount its going to cost.

Your combo Deal isn't valid anymore sadly.
it was a mistake on my part - I erased a 2 at the end of the url and now it's fine

that PSU is a weird form factor that won't work in anything but a couple of antec's cases, some of the P1s and I think the 1200

alright but is there that big of a difference between the performance of the 570 and the 560?

yeah you're right - I should've been more careful
there's some other options for 850W PSUs in that range so he can have his pick on that
Seasonic 850W (not modular) $135, Antec 900W (not modular) $130, or the XFX above
alright but is there that big of a difference between the performance of the 570 and the 560?
take a look at this - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/330?vs=306
the 560 ti is 2/3 of the 570's price for around 5/6 of the performance, so I guess you can decide for yourself whether you think that's worth it or not
if you do go for the 560 though that's fine but keep in mind you can get the computer for like ~$850

I'm probably going to stick with the 560, the performance difference isnt worth $120 to me. When you say 850 I guess you mean with your build? Also I noticed that motherboard says VGA card required? not sure what that means.

yeah I guess
also with 560 ti, you can settle for a 750W since 2 560 ti's uses considerably less power than the 570s in sli
alright I swapped out a few of my things for your suggestions jaehead but I think this is probably going to be what i'm going to go with unless someone has somemore suggestions?

You know what, nevermind since it's $120..

Forgot a hard drive.
Replace case with HAF 912 and add a Spinpoint F3. :)
Alright got the HAF 912 and spinpoint F3. final question before I order do I need anymore wires or thermal compound?
Alright got the HAF 912 and spinpoint F3. final question before I order do I need anymore wires or thermal compound?
Thermal paste would be a nice addition to the compound on the stock fan, so yes.
Alright thanks, I believe that pretty much sums up everything I need, thanks for the help everyone.
