Not posting this in fast threads since this isnt really a "quick question" thread.
I'll be going to ASU next year for a six months for an exchange program, but my plane doesnt go directly to pheonix (im in sydney) so i need to go to LA first. I'll be spending the day in LA and leaving the next morning. I've never been to the US before, and I'll be by myself, since im really only here in transit before I get to arizona, but i want to make the most of it.
What do you exactly want to do? I've lived around the area my whole life so I could tell you what's good.
Griffith Park Observatory has a great view of the city and a great view of the Hollywood-sign.
Hollywood is pretty much a giant shithole but it could be worth checking out to just say you've been there.
There's also Disneyland and Universal Studios.
Santa Monica Pier is famous and very nice to visit.
Venice beach is famous but pretty dirty and right next to Santa Monica Pier.
Olvera Street was important to the mexican immigrants and has lots of shops and stuff like that. Phillipes', the birth place of the french dip sandwich, is right around the corner.
Could try to catch a baseball game if there's one playing.
There's the La Brea Tar Pits and the Museum of Tolerance.
PCH is also a great highway to drive on if you rent a car or you could rent a bike and ride up the coast a bit. It's a pretty good ride.
Malibu is nice.
A WWII battleship got retired to San Pedro

Griffith Park Observatory is fantastic, but it's a bit of a trek to get there, and he'd basically spend his whole day there. I'd advise against going, even though it's great, because you'll be able to fit more in if you avoid going here.
Santa Monica pier is awesome, I'd check that out if I were you.
If you like space, though, and don't mind spending your day doing one thing, then for sure go to Griffith Observatory, and get into the Planetarium because that was an insanely good experience.
really though, you should go to the Getty Art Museum.

It has the best art and architecture in America, and it overlooks L.A.

But for serious, visit La Brea, the theme parks, check out the night life, and try to explore more of California. Drive down Mulholland Drive and fell really poor.
