• Making a Music Video!

Hey FP! About a month ago there was this calling from the local film institute here in Doha, Qatar. They were reaching out for students who wanted to get some hands-on experience on filmmaking; so they did a local band search. This Indian dude called Ashwin Renju sent his stuff in and we loved it. The institute then selected some students to put together a music video to his music. For some of Ashwin's music, check out his SoundCloud: http://www.soundcloud.com/ashwin It came down to four pitches (basically ideas/concepts for films/music videos) that were voted as the best, and although mine wasn't picked by the creator of the song (I was one of the four) I was still assigned to do all the camera work, tell lighting what to do and pretty much co-direct. it's been a huge adventure man. The main concept of the music video was that a nomad alien with no identity arrives on earth with a cart of instruments, and starts handing them to people. If they are a match, they follow him and join his inter-galactic band. If they're not a match, then they aren't invited in, even if they do follow him. Sounds trippy right? The outcome was awesome. We launched it at the Doha 'W' hotel, there was a huge audience, press and we just got a whole bunch of praise. If any of you have any opportunities to ever work on a film set, do it. It's a lot of fun, you meet great people and learn really cool things. I've done one of these before. In fact I acted as one of the lead roles in a music video that was locally directed and won an award at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival for a song by Nitin Sawnhey (He does a lot of video game music) and that was fun, but I've always been more of a behind the scenes kinda guy. I'm applying to film school in the winter and I just recently got the green light to use this for my demo-reel since I did all of the camera work; so it's all pretty exciting! I posted this in the creations corner, but I thought GD was more appropriate because I had pictures to share and a short kinda story to tell. Main idea is that even if you don't want to be a filmmaker, get involved with these things. They're a lot of fun. PICTURES! Overall, a good video/song. Mind telling me what equipment you used? In one of the stills it looks like you were using a dlsr. Was it for video or just stills? :)

It was a dlsr that recorded video with this beautiful focus lens, we could have used the usual big video cameras but this allowed a lot more room for experimentation. Our lighting was pretty much just portable LED stuff. Oh and the guy that appears in the music video on the tron-like motorcycle is a bit of a local figure. Middle aged man with this huge handlebar moustache, total bachelor, just lives his life building these cars and bikes with these crazy lights on them and cruises around playing loud music. He was great, really cool working with him.
Bboying part was sick, props!
Awesome!
That video was pretty awesome. Song was pretty cool too.
I like the song. Video is a bit cheesy for my taste but good overall
Thanks everyone. There was that bit of cheesyness when they were walking in a single file line across the same background but it was all deliberate. We were just looking to add a tiny bit of irony by including a little bit of cliché within an abstract context.
I like the pink chicken! Interesting music, not my taste but I like the video, not sure about the alien costume to be honest with you.
I like the pink chicken! Interesting music, not my taste but I like the video, not sure about the alien costume to be honest with you.
It was a cultural reference, since Arabic culture originates to Bedouin tribes, (bedouin is just an Arabic word turned english, the real word is Beduu, or plural Beduwi) which is basically Arabic for the nomads, what the alien is wearing is similar to the kind of clothing. These groups of people would literally roam the desert with no fixed place to live. Those days are obviously way behind us for the more developed Arabic nations but it was a bit of a homage to them. The helmet was just more to mask his face than anything, it was to kind of reinforce that he had no identity, and was a nomad while giving him a space-like and mysterious appearance.
Great video, but I don't see why you used good camera equipment and then only uploaded it to 360p on Youtube, it's a waste.
Haha that was neat. Cool video, good job.
It was directed at the quote, people all have different tastes.
I knew that, I wasn't questioning your musical taste but asking what was wrong with the quote? haha
Awesome !
I think the vignetting is abit too much. But, I'm pretty sure you didn't do the editing. Overall it looks great and it sounds like you had fun. I've always wanted to do a music video and get into videography.
I knew that, I wasn't questioning your musical taste but asking what was wrong with the quote? haha
Can you explain what you actually said?
Wow. I'm really digging the stills. The video is awesome. Not to mention the music. This is pure win.
Most of that shooting was good, and as an editor primarily I thought the opening fade was out of place and that some of the cuts were iffy early on, but overall the video looked pretty good. Song was catchy as hell too. It had some surrealistic moments that added a bit of clever flavor to it, and for the most part it seemed like the director had a consistent idea of what he wanted. The outdoor city shots were my favorite in any case. Keep up the good work! I've been wanting to do some music videos for a while but all the local bands here are so shitty that it's unbelievable. I wish I could afford film school.
Be sure to have big booty bitches
The first part (till 0:25) was a bit boring, I think it'd help if that was filled with a little music. The rest was really awesome though, I loved the rest of the clip and the song. Good job
That was pretty good :golfclap: What was your idea going to be for the video?
That was pretty good :golfclap: What was your idea going to be for the video?
My idea was a little less unusual, it was this whole layered up representation of someones conscience; basically 'good vs evil' done in a different way; represented through a race between two spiritual figures, a chess game and a bouncing scale. I won't bore you with the details, but it was to a different song.
It really, really needs to be filmed in HD. I dunno if Youtube has made it 360p? Honestly 1080 or 720p make a world of difference!
I made a video once:
I made a video once:
What is this 2004?
I made a video once:
I thought this died out a really long time ago.
How'd you promote this?
