A six-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a mountain lion in California yesterday.
The mountain lion, also known as a cougar, attacked the boy at around 1pm on a hiking trail near Cupertino, attempting to drag the child away before it was fought off by the boy’s father and another man, said Lieutenant Paul Foy of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The boy, who suffered bite wounds and scratches on his head and neck, was walking slightly ahead of a group of 10, including his parents and other families, when the cougar “came out of nowhere” and attacked him.
“It’s quite extraordinary the lion would attack a person with so many people in the immediate vicinity,” Lt. Foy said.
It is believed the big cat attacked the child in much the same it would a group of deer – by choosing and targeting the weakest member of the group.
What a fucking badass. Props to him.
Being hunted by animals sounds fucking terrifying
The fact that they go after the weakest. Makes sense but nature is brutal

That's gonna make one hell of a story to tell people
People whose Fight or Flight response has been triggered are fucking SCARY when they choose Fight.
Not many people can boast that they've beat off a cougar.

And the fact that they go for the weakest point, which is your neck.

I'm partial for one to beat me off.

That's why out here in North Carolina we freely kill coyotes. In large enough packs and considering how hungry the alpha is they will attack people that are alone sometimes. I'm glad we don't have mountain lions here in the foothills but I think we might in the mountains though.
It'd be sweet to see him in action. With his son's life at stake and him going into a full "I will beat the shit out of this wild animal" mode I bet it was a sight to see.
Fighting off Mountain Lion in Cupertino, you say? Sounds like a scheme amongst Microsoft employees...
