Google Inc began selling basic laptop computers to schools at a price of $99, meeting a price point that prominent MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte famously held out in 2005 as key to bringing computing power to the masses.
The Internet giant said on Monday that it will be offering the steep educational discount on Series 5 Chromebooks from Samsung Electronics Co through December 21. They typically retail for $399.
Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child Foundation failed to meet his ambitious target, which critics said would be impossible to meet when he set it. His XO laptop currently sell for about $200.
Still, he is widely credited with helping to launch the era of low-cost portable computing.
The creation of relatively low-cost laptops from his foundation pressured industry giants including Intel Corp, Microsoft Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc to develop inexpensive versions of their products such as the netbook.
That is quite nice of them.
Google is the shiniest example of good capitalism.
That's a nice gesture, but if I were buying systems for a district I would rather roll out something that is more manageable and configurable... chrome OS has very limited usability for anything outside of web browsing. But yeah, typically districts don't like anything where they cant have their hands on everything. No group policy, no network storage... I dunno. Will have to wait and see I guess.

They're capitalists that give free products, enable people to make money off of their products through adsense, encourage network growth, and markdown their products because they can afford it.
They make a few mistakes here and there, but they're fucking google, they make it up every day.
but guys google is bad microsoft said so D:

I imagine google is modifying apps for edu to allow for that

Does Bing and every other search engine still steal results from Google?
Please sell them to my school. I hate these crappy HP's and iPads

Your school... uses iPads for education? What?

It's actually a pretty neat idea
iPads are kinda cheap compared to your average school HP or Dell setup and they are so easy to use a monkey could operate one
Does Bing and every other search engine still steal results from Google?
Google caught them out doing it before if I remember correctly, there was a google blog post a few months back about it.
And they aren't built like utter shit and they have sufficient hardware to actually run their OS smoothly.
And almost no software of the scientific world runs on them, AWESOME.
Have fun with your arts degree mister taxi driver.

long story short the big g made searches for "fueucjdi253:()$795" give results for hamsters (not an actual example)
they waited a week, then searched bing for "fueucjdi253:()$795" and got hamsters
Google caught them out doing it before if I remember correctly, there was a google blog post a few months back about it.
It was BS too. They constantly searched a phrase using the Bing toolbar which eventually lead to Bing going "hey they keep searching this phrase and going to this page, perhaps we should learn from this user and include this in the search results when someone searches this phrase"
however bing shouldn't be using google to do that
I highly doubt any educational establishment below university level would use such software.
lessons just do not get that involved.
The point is that you get people used to environments even more closed and "it just works"-like than Windows.
It's probably the same reason why they sell the Nexus 4, a device that could have been sold for much more, at $300+.

nvm, found it
Windows is bad enough in that regard I suppose, most of the populace wouldn't be thick as shit when it comes to computers because all they were introduced to in school was MS-Office.
The biggest danger I see is that most of the stuff that happens on Chrome-Book is cloud-related and as nice as it is, after all I'm using Gmail and Dropbox, I really don't want Cloud-Based tools, Office and so on, take over.
Does Bing and every other search engine still steal results from Google?
It was to my understanding they dont necessarily 'steal' results; Google allows other search engine startups to pay to use their results, though I dont know what kind of limitation there is on it.

Yeah and then claimed it was bing that pilfered the results itself. In fact it was bing toolbar which was being used on the machines which actually says it in the usage agreement. had more of a combination with keyphrases and results on the machines used.

still dickish
"lol we don't need to do our own search spiders, just let people using the bing toolbar search google for the best results"
Does Bing and every other search engine still steal results from Google?
I wish they did because Bing can't search for shit.
Your school... uses iPads for education? What?
yeah mine does too, using autodesk CAD on it is a blast, to say the least. Very nicely made pieces of equipment, but they're just too pricey to warrant personal use.
excellent gifts though, got the latest model for my mother this year.

But the build quality of those are legendary. If only they made modern laptops as strong as the XO.
