RUBBISH bins bolted shut at Brisbane train stations yesterday will be removed indefinitely, a Queensland Rail spokeswoman has confirmed.
Bins at stations between Bowen Hills and South Brisbane, and at Toowong, were shut at the weekend, with laminated signs saying: “For safety concerns this bin is no longer available”.
The spokeswoman said those bins would be removed completely in the near future.
“Those particular bins will be removed indefinitely,” she said.
“It’s stations where there’ll be large crowds... basically our busiest stations.”
The spokeswoman said Queensland Rail had an established security plan linked to the Federal Government’s National Terrorism Public Alerts levels.
“Because we are well prepared and practiced we were able to implement this plan as soon as the Federal Government raised the alert level,” she said.
“One of these measures included the closure of bins at a number of stations.”
The spokeswoman said Queensland Rail was in the process of reviewing different bins with additional security features which may be put in place at our stations in the future.
“As always, we will ensure our stations are clean and tidy for our customers,” she said.
“We appreciate our customers’ understanding as we implement these necessary changes and ask that they dispose of their rubbish thoughtfully, at a later time.”
Earlier, Premier Campbell Newman confirmed the bins were being welded shut or removed in response to Queensland and Australia’s heightened terror alert level.
Mr Newman said the move was not especially aimed at preparing for the upcoming G20 meeting in Brisbane, pointing to Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s announcement last week about the raising of the alert level.
...
The Premier said the move was a clear sign the state was taking action in response to the fresh terror threat.
“People should be comforted by the fact that we are adopting a state of preparedness and readiness to ensure that we’re not an easy target, that we are protecting our community and these are signs that we are active,” he said.
“I said that we would act and you can see that action taking place.”
He added that the removal or shutting of bins was about making it more difficult for potential “criminals” to harm the community.
“This action protects Queenslanders,” he said.
and now there is garbage all over the station
I was wondering why the bins at toowong were sealed up. I didn't get time to see what the message said since I was already on the train.
Best part is, these stations have vending machines so this is literally the most stupidest decision Campbell Newman has done since his parents forgot to pull out
Wait what's stopping someone from hiding a bomb literally anywhere else?

nah they can't now, no more bins
What if they hide it in the trains? Ban them obviously.
They're idiots.. Like seriously, who thought this would be a great idea?
You could hide a bomb in a person, too. Let's not let people onto trains anymore.

Ooh! Like The Sum of All Fears! :v:
Everyone should just pile up their rubbish where the bins were to spite them.
I wonder why Indooroopilly didn't get their bins sealed up as well. That's another crowded place during the morning and afternoons.
[sp][s]I'll post after getting released.[/s][/sp]
this is pretty common for train stations that are quite popular, and yes they've gotten rid of vending machines as well for some cbd sydney stations.

Indro is insanely busy and if I'm ever there I at least have an empty Hungry Jacks cup that I was finishing while walking towards the station. People don't want to carry their rubbish with them.
The govt. announced they may close more bins, but I hope the backlash is tremendous
In theory couldn't a potential bomber just pull an 'Iraqi Convoy' on the train and just blow the tracks as it passes over them? That'd be way more devastating than a bomb in a bin.

Take a bin with a bomb in it... Pure genius!
Next they'll start putting bombs in the QR public toilets!
There's no bins around famous sites in London either, I was told for the same reason. I had to carry my cigarette butts with me, kinda shit.

All the QR toilets look like they were all hit with shit bombs so that's pretty ineffective

Also there's really no security or bag checks at any QR stations including those with go card gates, yet the Govt. fails to see that as a potential target
This is also a reality in London.

The same type of people who are scared of mosques, you know, morons.
To be fair there's bins in the middle of stations where's there's a lot of people at peak times. And can't people just hold onto their rubbish until they get to a bin instead of being scummy fucks?
Seriously, I hope they crack down on fining people dropping rubbish as well.
It's really not hard to walk a little way to a bin that's not on the train platform.

There's barely any bins around most stations apart from those at the stations, and this may expand further to Council bins. So tbh this course of action is very drastic based on the fear of a potential attack that may not even fucking happen

Aren't those the places where they sacrifice babies to Imhotep?
I live in Sofia and we don't have bins in the metro for the same reason. Here, it's not that pointless because the stations really don't have places where you could conceivably hide a bomb beside the bins.

It's all a fucking joke man. I once reported a suitcase left behind on a bus seat at Roma St Station and when I brought it up with a staff member, I was just laughed at. They eventually begrudgingly took it.

Not if they remove them, that's for sure

Better than any filthy muslam terrywrist using the bins to blow up innocent people!
