I'll try to explain it clearer, do you think i could have deep knowledge of the majority of genre's; like if were able to know about underground hip-hop artists such as DOOM, Macklemore, etc. and also about classical music and artists with good knowledge, yet also being able to hold my own with Jungle/D&B music? I personally think, with a lot of dedication it is possible, but it would take a persistent person to broaden their horizon's to such an extent.
Not only is it possible, it's not all that difficult. Just make listening to music your hobby.
But surely there's too much music genre's and sub-genres (although some probably overlapping) to do that over a year or so?
I believe it's possible if you can devote enough time to it. It may take a while though.
i'd like to dive into zouk
Yes, it is.
I see the overall theory is that it is possible, but are you all including the idea that you know how well the instruments in the song, or lyrics/vocals are in the song? Like so that you could critique on any genre you choose to and debate if anyone decides to oppose you?
It's possible, but you'll find songs that you just can't label with a specific genre or sub genre. That's when you stop caring what it is and just enjoy the music.
I would have to say no. There are too many genres and there are new sub-genres emerging all the time(look at how many types of metal there are now versus the 80s). By the time you came close to knowing every genre you would find that 500 more sub genres have popped up.
