AMD quits, - lets Intel dominate the CPU marked
In a move than could very well be interpreted as exchanging one problem for another, Advanced Micro Devices has decided to stop focusing so much on the PC business and get its act closer together on the mobile front.
The Bulldozer disaster, as it is known in some circles, must have persuaded AMD's leadership that the PC side of their business wasn't flying very well and far anymore.
Though everyone was expecting much from 8-core processors, the performance was, in the end, well lower than some of AMD's own previous-generation chips.
Whether because of this or something else, it was reported that Advanced Micro Devices has chosen to distance itself from its competition with Intel.
That is to say, it will focus less on processors for PCs and pay more attention to the mobile market.
As such, it will probably start to customize its Fusion platform in such a way as to create tablet and smartphone chips.
"We're at an inflection point," said AMD spokesman Mike Silverman, according to a Mercury News report. "We will all need to let go of the old 'AMD versus Intel' mindset, because it won't be about that anymore."
If anything, 2011, with more than half a year of lacking an actual CEO, was a clear symptom that Advanced Micro Devices had to do something, and soon.
The company has a new leader now and, sure enough, the man took some fairly drastic measures, and that includes more than this latest change in direction, as well as a branded RAM project.
The workforce also suffered, especially the PR and marketing departments AMD axed large portions of each as part of its plan to cut total worldwide employee count by 10%).
The complicated thing about the focus on mobile is that ARM already has that well enough in hand, and NVIDIA just launched the Kal-El too. AMD may just be exchanging one headache for another with this.

Not sure if good news or sad news.
Sad news, Intel CPU prices or going to get insanely high.
are you fucking kidding me
god DAMN IT
Does this mean Intel gets monopoly status?
Does this mean Intel gets monopoly status?
Yes, on the PC CPU market.
Fucks sake..
Well looks like we know who the soviets are in this cold war then.
I don't want Intel to be a monopoly.
While I love intel and everything, this is really bad. Without competition intel will get full of themselves and release subpar stuff for high prices. Hopefully atleast amd won't leave desktop gpu market
Oh shit
Noooooooooooooo, I like my AMD processor.
As much as I dislike AMD and prefer Intel this is utterly terrible news. Competition is what drives innovation and without it Intel have no real reason to push to the extreme.
Imagine how horrible it would have been if they also quit making graphic cards for the PC too.
Nvidia controlling the market altogether. Jesus, horrible thoughts :(
Da fuck.
Not sure if to believe it, or if I'm missing something that shows it's a joke.
It isn't even saying they're quitting the PC market, just that they're focusing on mobile stuff. This is likely just because Bulldozer sucked so much. It's possible that their next release with the FM2 socket will be a huge improvement that brings them back into the game.
With the massive failure of bulldozer, i was half expecting this.
Competition is good for both the businesses and the consumers. This is bad news, definitely.
If they're giving up on PC, what's their ram gonna be for? :v:
The bulldozer series is awesome in applications that can actually utilize all eight cores.
Sadly most people say they suck because they've only tried them in games. "UMGG I'VE GOT THIS EIGHT CORE CPU AND COD MW3 STILL RUNS LIKE SHIT WTFFF"
Yeah, well, has it occured to you that the thing you're running can barely take advantage of two cores, let alone eight?
Also, terrible news. I suspect a mediocre Intel CPU will go for about 200 dollars now, if not more.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I hope Intel won't raise the prices much, cause I'm going to need a new CPU soon...
Might be good, if intel releases shit for high prices then smaller brands might get a chance and we might get some innovation through there, that would be best case scenario though... :suicide:
Hopefully someone new pops up so Intel has competition..
A man can dream
arm desktops
This sounds oddly familiar... Didn't they state in 02' that they were going to shift away from PC CPUs?

They aren't quitting, but they are pretty much giving victory to Intel and resigning themselves to a small part of the market. Companies don't just quit overnight, too big a change for something so big, but this is the start.
However I'm quite sure they mean only the CPU part, not GPUs and upcoming RAM (though this is a sign business isn't going too well).
My laptops running on an AMD processor...
They're not leaving the desktop market - they're just focusing less on it. They have a the road plan for the bulldozer platform laid out, I doubt they're gonna drop it.
shit, that changes my mind on upgrading my athlon to a phenom this christmas

Even with all 8 cores in use, it's worse than Intel's (4 core) 2500k, and uses much more power. They just can't keep adding so much power to a dead socket like AM3(+), sure it's nice that they keep backwards / forwards compatibility with the similar sockets, but the socket needs to go.
